My infotainment setup using a Samsung Galaxy Tab

(I'm going to try and post everything over the next 3-4 days, so bear with me, as I like to be a bit in depth).

I posted about this in another thread, but figured I should branch off as the other thread kinda veered off topic. I wanted to use a Galaxy Tab as my head unit. Makes sense as it is pretty much a self contained PC.

    My initial setup includes:

    -A non-activated Sprint Galaxy Tab
    -OEM Samsung car mount
    -Pioneer DEQ 9200
    -Pioneer 9500GMT amp
    -Image Dynamics minihorns
-Focal 165VRS Polyglass 6.5" shallow mount mid bass

The Samsung OEM Mount is a pretty sturdy unit. I was wondering how the unit held the Tab in place, and would it do so handily. The answer is a resounding "yes". One of the primary reasons I selected this mount is because the charger is built into the bottom, so it makes the installation look that much cleaner. Once docked, the charger portion slides into the Tab securely.

The rest of the accessories include:
-a pad that is smooth on one side w/3M adhesive (it says "3M" on it) on the other with which to secure the arm to the pad via the suction cup, and the sticky part of the pad to the dash
    -a USB cigarette lighter adapter
-an adapter cable that runs from the charging station to the cigarette lighter adapter.

It has a 2" diameter mechanical suction pad that is actuated by closing a latch on the front of the mount. Disconnection is done simply by pulling up on the latch. Since I was looking for something a bit more OEM looking, I pulled off my stock rearview mirror (when using it, one can't see out the back of the truck, anyway) and disconnected the portion that attaches to the glass.

Given the sturdy nature of the suction cup, I'm going to give it a whirl over the next week or so to see how it holds up, but I most likely will end up pulling off the suction cup mechanism and fabbing in the stock rearview mount. It doesn't look like it will be that difficult, and the angles match up perfectly.

I have a rooted Evo 4G w/free wifi tether, and that will provide the Tab w/unlimited Internet access. I'm not going to pay Sprint another $30/month for a data plan that is unnecessary.

The DEQ features a separate head unit and control box that is mounted in a different location. Since the head unit is only about 2" thick, accommodations had to be made for it to fit in a stock DIN. It didn't have brackets so I had to figure something else out. After fitting and test fitting to make sure it would stick out far enough but not too far, I settled on securing it to a 3/4" thick piece of MDF, then attaching the MDF to some steel strapping, then attaching the strapping to the truck.

So I stuck the door speakers in, and that's been done before, so it's no big deal. Mounting horns, however, are a pain, as I found out. Steel strapping is the best bet from what I've been able to determine. Again, it takes a lot of fitting and refitting to get the straps all in place and the speakers solidly in place. I had to use a few straps, but the results speak for themselves. The speaker doesn't move, the straps aren't in the way, and there is more than enough room between the speaker and the pedals.

Here's modification of the straps as the speaker was out during one of the test fittings....

And here it is in place....

I'll be fabricating a speak-mesh grille for them which will be overlaid with speaker cloth. It took me ~ 3 hrs/side.

I took a 3.5mm to RCA adapter and plugged it into the Tab and the "Input" RCAs on the amp, and viola, everything works nicely. Cool, so I then plugged the 3.5mm to RCA into the EQs "Input" RCAs, and nothing happens. There isn't a lot of information about the DEQ readily available, especially in this kind of setup, so I was stumped for about 2-3 days. After doing some research on Digital to Analog, I'm thinking that it can't process the digital signal, as it processed the *analog* signal coming from the amp w/out an issue. I hopped on the 'net and found a 3.5mm to Toslink cable, and then picked up a small, audio DAC box (Toslink to RCA) on Amazon for $45. Hopefully it'll work, but I won't know until tomorrow when the box arrives. If it doesn't, I'll have to chunk the EQ. It won't be much of an issue when I'm listening to MP3s on Tab, as the MP3 player I use, PowerAmp, has an EQ that works with this setup. It won't work, however, listening to streaming music.

Nice setup! Your idea of that digital to analog converter with the toslink with 3.5 adaptor should work. I'm curious on your results on that. For my tablet i'm using an archos 70 but my headunit is stock. It does have Bluetooth a2dp so i use that since there isn't any noticeable distortion surprisingly. I totally agree with you on tethering your phone for internet. Just makes sense since your paying for internet anyway might as well make use of it. I'm assuming that since you say its unactivated that you bought the unit outright correct? just curious so basically you use it via wifi and or cell phone tethering. Also You don't have any pics up of it setup on your windshield yet I'd love to see it.

You still working out the kinks and details on the car audio stuff? From the looks of it should be a real nice sq setup with the image dynamic horn tweeters and foals when you get it done. I have heard alot of good things about image dynamics horns and their idmax subs. I had a pioneer headunit once in an old car of mine they sounded good and have lots of preamps for building nice systems.

Hey as far as EQ is concerned since you have a rooted evo4g if your running a gingerbread rom you might want to check out the Equalizer app from the market. https://market.android.com/details?i...apps.equalizer this way you can have system wide eq for use with whatever music app you want. Just a suggestion or idea to check out. I'm on a stock froyo rom so i can't test it but heard some good tings about it.

Whenever you do get that whole thing sorted out i would love it if you posted it on my site. Just started it (less than a month old) and it's a community like this only for android car enthusiasts like yourself. I have a gallery for android car installs so if you want to show it off feel free. http://www.android-car.com/Show-Off-Your-Ride.html I'm in the Process of getting pics up of my install myself. You can check out some info on what apps and what not I'm running there.

I am almost done with my Galaxy tab setup... you have to hear the difference with a custom rom that has Voodoo enabled. the sound quality out of the headphone jack dramatically increased. you can also adjust the gain for line out mode to prevent any extra noise.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....I haven't rooted it yet, so I guess I'll have to get around to it. Which ROM are you using? On XDA?

Unfortunately, the Toslink to 3.5mm adapter doesn't register on the phone or the Tab, i.e., the "headphone" icon never appears to indicate that a jack is inserted. It has an RCA in on that side as well, so I tried using a 3.5mm to RCA to feed into it, and that didn't work, either. As such, the adapter went back to Amazon.

Gingerbread isn't yet available for the Tab as far as I know, but I'm patient and it will only be a matter of time before it is ported. And yes, I purchased the Tab outright, no service contract.

At this point, I can say that the mount is going to have to be modified b/c it has a spring in it, and when the going gets bouncy, the unit starts bouncing, as well. Over the next week or so I'm going to start on a mount using the windshield rear view as I contemplated before, or I'm going to start making something that will allow the Tab to slide in place, a la the iPad in Prius video that was posted in another section of this forum earlier. Overall, though, I've been *very* pleased with the outcome, hopefully I'll be acquiring a sub and amp shortly so I can get the rear fill I'm looking for.

Edit: The Honeycomb port for the Tab is almost complete, so I'll probably wait until it is finished before updating the stock rom.

Yeah im using Kashmeks Voodoo rom if you are using a verizon based GT.

I found some great profiles for the program Tasker. Since i am not using any type of dock i need to set this or else the screen turns off.

    1. When charging power is connected set screen time out to 23hrs and set screen awake lock to on, and resume playing

    2. Upon power disconnect (or when car shuts off) pause playing, set screen time out to 15 seconds, and screen awake off.

Now when i start the car it resumes playing and prevents screen time out.

when i turn off the car the screen turns off and music pauses.

This works with the stock music player or winamp. Mortplayer dosent respont to tasker commands.

    I havent tried slacker yet.

Awesome app, this tasker. Now that the Galaxy Tab is going for $350 (Pre order at Fry's), it's very tempting.

I'm thinking of using a tablet for my headrests (<$200 budget). I just need one that runs tasker well and I'm set.

How did you get Winamp to respond to Tasker commands? I have a task to play media and start Winamp, but the media is playing within Tasker, as in, there's no way to change songs or see what song is playing, and Winamp can't see it either.

EDIT: Found it, I was setting Tasker to play music, instead set Tasker to "Toggle Pause", which Winamp picks up, like pressing multimedia keys on a pc.

    Bingo... i love this thing.

Best $199 i spent at the verizon store. Im telling you you have to mod it to enable the voodoo sound chip.. sound is amazing. Now i just need an easy volume control knob.
