I agree that a mechanized tray would be pretty cool. I really like the hidden IPod / Android set-up. Are you looking into the new iphone app development to see what would work best in your car? Hiding all your little expensive pieces is a great idea, of course. Do you happen to have any more pictures in different angles? I'd love to see this thing in action.
This looks amazing dude... I love it. I am working on something similar, but the one I am working on will be hinged at the bottom and tilt out foe insertion/removal.
I'm doing a similar project with the Viewpad, but I've tried some car chargers (even two 5V/2A output) without success.
The charger speed is not enough to maintain the charge.
Could you tell me your car charger reference? Thank you a lot!
I'm just using a generic cigarette-to-usb adaptor. Are you plugging yours into the cigarette socket? Maybe it's a limitation of your socket? I have mine hardwired to the car as follows.
Or maybe it's the USB cable? Are you using a data cable? Maybe you need a dedicated usb power cable with 2 wires, maybe it restricts the amps if it thinks it's plugged into a usb port on a pc. I went through a few usb cables because I needed one I could hack down and fit into a tight spot.
Re your PM, don't have my tablet infront of me, but it's just one of the options, think it's Display and then set it to Always On. I think there's a bug with Android though, where if even if the screen timeout is changed, it won't actually take effect until the screen is touched. When I started my car, the screen would timeout, but I fixed that by getting PowerAmp to start up and in PowerAmp I set the option something like "Leave screen on when running".
This is a badass install man. Hows the speed of the viewsonic tab? Are you happy with its performance?
Thanks a lot, badmonkey!
I will check it with a generic car charger. I was using a USB charger and a data cable, because I thought all them were identicals.
Anyway, what's the difference between your car hardwiring and standard cigarette plug? My cigarette plug only works when I ignite the car, so might be the same result, isn't it?
In terms of performance, I only had problems with OBD2 "DashCommander", because it has too lag. I'm using Torque which is near real-time. Are you agree?
It's not too bad, the only times it's felt slow is the built-in browser, but I installed Dolphin and that was much quicker. And Angry Birds Rio. Last week I also rooted it and flashed it with a new ROM that overclocks it to 800Mhz and enables hardware acceleration, I just hope that doesn't affect the battery life.
I see that original viewpad wall charger has addicional pins than standard mini USB. That's probably why I can't get the same charging speed in my car.
But, I see badmonkey happy with his generic car charger. Its usb plug is standar? please, could you tell me where have you taken from, or at least, the electrical characteristics?
And, could you say me a forum to take profit of this tablet?
I'm thinking it might be possible that there's a max current allowed through your cigarette plug, whereas if you wire your charger up direct to the battery, there should be no bottleneck apart from your charger. Wire it up as per the diagram and it will only turn on when the car is turned on. And it should also remove any ground-loop problems.

I never tried Dashcommander, Torque was only $2, mental cheap for an OBD app and a pretty good app too.
Of course, please, don't open your slot.
It seems the original wall charger -which really charges very quick- is specific for the Viewpad.
Because, if I use another standard wall charger the charging speed is also very low.
So, if I use an standard charger in the car I would expect the same results, even directly connected to battery.
Anyway, in your case, ...it's working!
Well, I will try what you suggest.
