One alternative to the IOIO and programming an app from scratch to read values from the steering wheel controls would be to hook a JoyCon EX directly up to the Android tablet. I believe Honeycomb will accept USB HID devices like the JoyCon EX.

The JoyCon has to be programmed in Windows but can be used with any OS after it's been programmed.

I have a JoyCon EX but I don't have a Honeycomb (or ICS) tablet to experiment on. At that point we might be able to use Tasker or some other Android app to do different actions when it receives keystrokes from the steering wheel via the JoyCon EX. This last part is what I'm unsure about. Does anyone know of any Android apps that will take keyboard keystrokes and do something with it or any plugins for Tasker/Locale that could fit the bill?

Interesting concept - have wondered when we were going to see this technology in the car. We've had smartphones and Sirius receivers that can pause and rewind, so figured by now we'd already have a smartphone/tablet type device that would replace our existing head units.

I stumbled across this head unit: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/48...d_Car_DVD.html

    Charging

    Hey mate,

Loving your work looks amazing. I think you've commented on my build on the focus using a viewpad. Im having problems trying to find a way of charging the tablet.

I cut the end off the normal wall charger as it's the weird 10 pin version, just every car charger I hook it up to it kills or makes buzz.

    Buzzzzzzzzz so annoying!

I really dont want to use a power inverter, but its looking like the only way to make it work!

    Thanks for your help.

Make sure the charger and equalizer if you have one use the same grounding point. My amp uses the same grounding point as well, but it's just a mini bike amp sitting in the din slot, doubt you can do that with a full size amp. I also had to get a Ground Loop Isolator and a couple of ferrite beads.

That is a cool idea!! I have plenty of drives laying around, going to pull them apart and see what all I can use.

Hi, I'm from Germany and is something we are not current. But I'm also a tray 7 "Odys Space in the center console installed. Unfortunately, I have a problem. When I turn on ignition, there remains OFF tray. Display will not do. On your video device is switched on with ignition ON. How did you it made? My power supply is connected to ignition. it delivers current.

GREAT read, GREAT custom work!! Thanks for posting all the details. I have questions concerning the audio portion. I am an audiophile, and clarity and tuning of music is very important to me. Are you just using the headphone jack for your main sound output? I don't have a tablet YET, but where else could you get a clean sound output from. The other problem is the lack of pre amp outputs. A JL clean sweep like previously mentioned could take care of that, but can you actually get a cd quality sound out of a tablet?

Honestly my audio is loud crisp and clear through my tablet. I don't think that is an issue especially since most new ones have HD quality output. Especially when I stream Netflix in my car and switch my amp to surround sound....it's awesome!

Can you give me a little more info about what you have for speakers, amps, etc.. I'd also like to know if you are taking from the analog feed from the headphone jack and just amplifying it or a digital signal from HDMI and processing it before it gets amplified?

A lot of newer tablets are coming out with hdmi-out.
I only listen to MP3's, so trying to get better quality output than that would be a waste of time.
