You shouldnt have to point to any folder, it will automatically pick up all media on your device (unfortunately this includes ringtones and other sounds) but this allows for more features. If you have media it should show, what exactly is the problem you are having, can you not see your media or is it not opening and crashing?

It opened only after playing media in another player a few times and still not all media is showing. But is't still not showing a few Music (artist) folders. It seems I need to open other media players to do the media scanning. Could there be an option to select media folders?

You first version there was a main menu, now it looks to open directly to the Music player with a menu pop out, was this intended?

Noticed GPS doesn't start automatically, for some reason...
Also, flipped from Music to Video and Music kept playing, once, not each time.

    Great work so far...

GPS features arent apart of this app, to do things like navigation you need to use google navigation (or whatever program you use). I got rid of the speed and direction display, because truthfully they are useless and arent needed, you have a speedometer in your car and its really just a gee wiz type of thing for the direction, most rear view mirrors have it also. Having the GPS on takes a lot of energy and drains the battey and generates a lot of heat on the device so if you dont need it, it is better to not have it on. Also it uses quite a bit of CPU as well, and since there is already playing music I got rid of those features.

As for the main menu, I changed the layout and it opens to the now playing screen as the default screen, since the main purpose is to play music this is more useful and better uses the space available.

There was basically two ways I could have choosen to handle media: 1. To use the built in MediaStore (not really a store just what they call their programming for the media) to access the different kinds of media. the pros to this is it allows me to easily access information about the media like artist, genre, album, duration, etc. the cons to this is I cant do folder browsing or more customized viewing to the extent that might be required and cant leave out certain types of media. 2. was to make my own file browser and search through the folders manually, the pros of this is a directory could be set to only include files you want, but the cons are that its a lot more complicated coding, have to make own filters to only show the proper files and getting information about the songs is difficult. With all this in mind I choose the first method because in a car I want simple navigation and dont need lots of features for browsing so I lost some stuff but gained others.

You have a unique problem that I havent had anyone else mentioned. I have changed how it browses the music some and made it more efficient (though the basic protocol it uses is the same) but wait until this next release and see if you have the problem still. Also what are you running this on, because of android being open source each phone developer has done some internal changes to it to fit what they want, then each service provider also does some changes to add their content on it so, a lot of times they end up causing problems with certain things and this could be one of them. its a drawback to android that makes it hard to develop for all devices

And Now I have a present for all those who have been waiting....The beta releases for both Tablet and Froyou and heres what has been added/changed:

-Video Player is complete, better displaying, handles saving position if you back out and restart video (does not save if you close program)
-Music Browser has been drastically changed for tablet and for froyo just added more info while browsing
-Improved how the browsing works internally, doesnt show anything to you, but know its better and took me forever to do it
-Adjusted most of the fonts to fit better for both phone and tablet (now playing screen is the exception)
    -Made Wifi actually work
-Added ability to delete a set launcher button
-Tablet added a button on action bar to bring up volume control (gestures still work though)
-Created catch if you dont have any media installed so it wont crash

What still is going to be changed should be all visual layout stuff and wont change the functionality:
-Adjust nowplaying display to utilize space better
-Update Tablet graphics with higher resolution for better crispness and display
    -App Icon

The last thing that I will work on before it final release will be the AndCar Launcher it will become a program within itself that will run in the background constantly and watch for certain actions (that will be available to choose from) and do certain things based on those actions. It will be a simple version and wont allow much customization (sorry) it will be a free simple alternative to using tasker. If someone wants more features for launching and controlling automation then use tasker app to control it. This will be a simple app to let you choose to launch the app on power plug in, headphone plug in or bluetooth connection. And do some simple stuff like control initial volume.

As always with those who decide to test this, please post a screenshot with what kind of device you are using it on, and if you have problems send me a PM with a description of the problem, what device you are using, steps to reproduce.

And here are the Links to download

FROYO Version--Must have 2.2 or above to use
HONEYCOMB Versopm--Must have 3.0 or above to use

The Launcher--Only needed if you dont have the android carHome app.

    Enjoy

Edit: Also just because, if you find most your files dont have album art the android app Cover Art Downloader is free and does a very good job, I used that to fill in all my album art.

Edit 2: So realized I forgot to add something to allow the wifi to actually work, so for this beta it wont work, but it will in the final version it was a one line thing i forgot so it is now functioning.

Testing on a MyTouch 4G (T-Mobile). (testing tablet later)

Noticed a restart seems only way to update UI. Also seems I have to have the 'MediaScannerService' running for it to find all media loaded on the phone. I agree on the GPS, I was only looking for the check option to turn GPS on in Settings. When I know I'm taking longer drivers (or when I have no idea where I'm going) I open GPS (Google Maps) but notice Maps dose not start GPS and doesn't always give you the option sO I have to exit AndCar go to Settings and turn on GPS then all the way back in.. pain..

I see your point about media scanning. To stay with your current setup, might you be able to say.. 'Black List' folders/files to not add, or 'White List' those you do? Still don't see the 'Rusted Root' folder, other players can see them, so..?

Also, setup menu to show 3 pages but only one shows. Swiping any direction doesn't do anything till swiping left closes it. Idea?

Would like to see a Setting for a Startup screen. I'm with you on media, but girlfriend listens to NPR, so she would start with Radio most often.

Good point on the GPS setting, ill go ahead and put that in for the final release. As for the media scanning, there isnt anything specific that I have seen to be able to take out certain folders, especially since every phone has different file formats as the default. The folder method would solve this but a lot more difficult I figured just take the bad with the other method.

As for switching through the other pages, you need to swipe in the empty space to the right of buttons either up or down, there is a problem with gestures and things that already have clickability.

I have mentioned in other post, but dealing with outside apps is nearly impossible with android, its a safety precaution to allow your app security, so with that, there would be ways to make it to where you could have a certain app start but it would be sloppy and not great, as with any frontend you are gonna have to use the shortcuts once its open (sorry).

The MediaScannerService is something new, again not sure exactly what is causing the problem cause it works on the devices Ive tried and dont have a MyTouch to play with. I will look into it and see if I can figure out if Im missing something still and thanks for the input.

With the restart for the UI, is that when you update it you need to restart to have the update take effect?

Thanks on GPS check box. Idea on start page. If an outside app, could you set up a way to open AndCar then auto click a menu button (or like that) so say Radio is button #3, app would open and button #3 would auto click and Radio (or whatever) would open.

Restart was for both new App update and just to update media (only Music, all video is found) Rusted Root folder still not seen, but is found by Moboplayer (like option to view as ripped or fullscreen) and stock player..

It's amazing how fast progress is being made here! Can't wait to try the latest version, hopefully I'll have some time with it tomorrow.

There isnt a way to see the xml files for the skin, if you are talking about the font for the main now playing screen (the home screen) thats going to be changed, Im going to be changing how that info is displayed so i havent bothered adjusting the font size on it. It will change though I promise and all font will be readable. Other than the home screen fonts everything should be a good size
