Basic questions about android as carcp

I found a few other topics, but still feel the need to ask these questions here.

I think that ideal implementation would be for android tablet as all on one while car stereo would be just volume control. So required functions for me would be: good music player, gps, handsfree phone.

    So here are my questions:
    1. how to use android tablet as bluetooth handsfree for my phone? Is it possible jet?
    2. is it possible to use my phone as access point for android tablet to internet at same time?
    3. how to make it power on and off with ignition? Power off should be preferably delayed with tabled running on battery for a few minutes.
    4. can it work with usb or bluetooth gps receivers?
    5. is it possible to use some launcher for carpc apps (navi, music, phone, ...) after start instead of android default desktop?

Im currently working on a project to make an Android tablet much more car friendly and easy. So here is what I can say about your questions:

    1. Not sure on this one and doing some research into so will get back to you on that

    2. If you mean use your phone as a mobile hotspot then yes this is possible depending on your phone carrier, all tablets have wifi capability so this is relativily easy to set it up to auto connect when in range.

    3. there are some apps out there that allow you to do automation with certain events like being plugged in or hitting a certain time, I havent gone into too much depth with these apps but I have seen them, I quick google search and you should be able to find something. To make it work you would add an event to shut it down when power it is unplugged (aka the car dock/charger isnt getting power) turning it back on though would be a little more difficult since the app isnt running

    4. this is kinda a mute point depending on the tablet but I have yet to see an android device that doesnt have built in gps (and the android software comes with a turn by turn navigation built in) the only downside to this is you need some kind of internet connection to load the maps for the navigation (though getting lat/lon and general data from GPS is still capabale without it)

    5. Yes!!! as this is the main focus of my current project (see my thread about an Android frontend in the forum) I am currently making an app which simplifies and makes using the android device much more car friendly.

there are bluetooth GPS recievers that should work with android devices, there is also an application that allows you to tether the GPS from your android phone to another android device.

i'd like to know about the handsfree information as well, i've researched but haven't been able to find anything, i can't even get my phone and my tablet to connect via bluetooth so at this time i doubt it.

you can tether for internet but some devices lock out adhoc networks meaning you wont be able to use your phone as a hot spot, there are software workarounds however they are for advanced users.

i've used 2 automation programs that are pretty good are called automateit and tasker, they are both pretty good but only one of them is free. there are a few car front end applications out there but they are not very full featured yet. that should change pretty soon.

for now i would recommend beautiful widgets for large customizable homescreen time, date and weather. torque for ODBII information, and the 2 previously mentioned automation apps. also do a search for car home and you'll find some front end programs.

I'm going to guess no to number 1. Android is a smartphone OS primarily and doesn't have any use-cases where it won't have a modem in the hardware.

Haven't found a way to do this yet
    2. is it possible to use my phone as access point for android tablet to internet at same time?
    Yes, wifi tethering
    3. how to make it power on and off with ignition? Power off should be preferably delayed with tabled running on battery for a few minutes.
You shouldn't need it to power off and on, I use Tasker on mine so when the car is turned off, ie. USB not charging, the screen timeout is set to 5 seconds and the screen turns off. When the car turns on, the screen instantly turns on and starts playing music. My drive to and from work is only 15 minutes each way, but that is enough to fully charge the tablet from it sitting idle the rest of the day.
But yes, with Tasker you can set the tablet to power down, but then you'd have to wait for it to boot when you turn your car on, unnecessary.
    4. can it work with usb or bluetooth gps receivers?
I've heard some can, but you can't be sure, better off buying a tablet with gps built-in
    5. is it possible to use some launcher for carpc apps (navi, music, phone, ...) after start instead of android default desktop?
I use LauncherPro and I think I have a pretty sweet front-end, large stylish icons, and can change them anytime I get bored with them. Check it out, links in my sig.

    BT-GPS works

Bluetooth external GPS receivers work perfectly with android in combination with; BlueGPS4Droid
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833094

It uses the android API - Mock Locations.

One sidenote. Sygic and NDrive both reading the NMEA hardware instead of using the android GPS API. Because of that, both Sygic and NDrive software packages don't work

Tested iGO, CoPilot and Navit. All three work! (Navit is free and opensource)

Thank you very much sir, that is what i needed to know. I wanted this because it gives everyone much more installation options. Also in my car it is very hard to get gps signal almost anywhere in front because of glass thick glass.

Now bluetooth handsfree is only thing i would like to have to have all in one solution.

Also is it only possible to tether for android using WiFi? Can i also tether using blootooth? My iphone like so tether trough bt more then trough wifi

That seems to be enough, at least as a start. I would like to install device in dash so i don't know how accessible power button will be - but in a worst case i can probably wire up the switch for power button on the device somewhere.

I am Dutch so... Tasker is a bit expensive (worth it tho!). You can first try out "AutomateIt", it is free. (https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result)

I use it to maximize the volume, turn on bluetooth and run BlueGPS4droid when the tablet is forced into car mode.

You can for instance make a delayed task "shut off when not on charger". If you turn of the car and therefor the carher is disconnected the tablet goes off after a certain delay.

How to turn it on without a power button is the next question?

Also sound priorities is another questions so BT handsfree (when it will be possible ) would be priority 1 then GPS as second and mp3 player last. well android is still quite not here jet

I don't think you number 1 will work below Android 3.0 as all Android version are supposed to be phones. Why use a phone to connect to a phone?

With a real tablet version of Android which are here already as Honeycomb, this is might be solved with some extra packages. I don't own a honeycomb tablet so can't look at it for you.
