In addition to the radio and DVD applications, there is a GPS module. That module should not be open and modified? What do you think?
I see your point, we also working on a possibility to build an open source car software like Linux.
So, everybody can feel free to contribute into project.
As an output we will have a robust and reliable software that is free for everyone.
Right now, you may open the booting software image using any unzip program, and modify it. Then software may be re-installed.
Another way to modify the original code is to root into device and modify some files, keeping in mind that original files should be backed up. The most important thing is to know what you are doing, and keeping track of any changes.

    Hello iFrozenMan,

sorry I don't understand your post.
Android is based on a linux kernel. To use radio, dvd, gps, touchscreen, ... there are linux kernel modules necessary supporting the hardware. The source code of these kernel modules is the problem: The kernel and the android UI can be downloaded from google but where to get the source code of these kernel modules for the used hardware? For some vendors of hardware open source modules exist, for other not. Only the producer can (with gpl perhaps must) deliver all source.
The other thing are applications (dvd, radio, navigation) and the starter application. These are not so important because the can be used other applications instead.

You are talking about a software image, where can it be downloaded?

I will not buy such a device without getting the sources to for the hardware support to perhaps make modifications. This is also needed to get ICS on the device.

You also wrote about rooting the device. Has someone already rooted one?

Is there any CyanogenMod support for this device yet?

The whole reason I want Android on my dashboard is so that I'm in charge of what's happening on my dashboard. I've had good experiences replacing the factory firmware with CyanogenMod on my cell phone and a tablet. CyanogenMod is far less effort than building Android from scratch, but it's fully has most of the same advantages. So, it's a good way to have my cake and eat it too. If your all's device supports Cyanogen, I pretty much have to buy it -- else, I have to wait around for you all to polish it.

That's what I'm talking about. CyanogenMod of course will not support the device yet. But if you have the sources for the drivers/modules you can start building support for this device with CyanogenMod.

No one outside from Carit, have the sources.
Carit have some unique realisation, and I think they are unwant to publication own sourcecode.
For example they have code for API-communication with DVD-drive. Android-GUI interface via low-level API, communicates with outside hardware.
When CD-Audio is inserted, it looks like an ordinal CD-player: timeline, tracklist (I am don't have an example CD with CD-text on it, so I can't test it for supporting of this feature). But inside the andriod! Not as an overlayed video capture(like a rear-camera or a real DVD-player).
So, if android GUI have information about tracklist and, when play starts, about current position on track, it is a marker of communication between android GUI and hardware CD-player.

I think this is not a single feature, which is looks like an unique realisation.
Anyway, for now, I am not hear about supporting of CD or DVD drives, performed on some other android devices.

    PS.
Our reseller have on tests the firmware realised from 14-apr-2012
the main fixes in this release is device startup stability and better compatibility between navigation audio output and background sounds from radio or other sources.
After the test-period is successfully ends, they start to distribute this update to customers.

BillyX, this is an information. You can trust.
Or, did you mean, the realisation of CD-playing is not unique, realized by CarIT ?

I know, the explanation, performed by my person - may be looks is not very nice, according to the rules of English (or the American angle) language.
But I think, the main words about discussed stuff - is have the hits into the minds of readers.
The main target, which I am is pursuing, is the popularising of Innotrends products.
But, it is strong accent - I am not a person, affiliated this the manufacturer. I am is the ordinary user of this device. The user, which is the sees the much better future of this device.

If more and more people hearing about and installing this devices, then more chances to find the Human, who can be a Guru, and who can forcing the custom FirmWare, by decompiling of the distributed firmwares.
The main benefit of the dreams about that, is the situations with the D-Link's wireless routers: We (as an abstract users) have the Guru: Oleg, who is produce the firmwares, which is the more powerful than the base firmware.
And as the "next level", if we have the Guru, we have more chances to "take the sources" from CarIT.
Quotation is meaning for any way, to produce the better firmwares: open the sources for the community, or open the mind of Guru's for the CarIT engineers.

At the moment I have an pioneer avic for 800 and I hate it. I use my mobile (sygic) for navigation because the avic is so bad.
I also see unlimited possibilities for a good android car-stereo. It is a shame that there is no comparable car-stereo to the latest tablets (ICS, 1.5 Ghz Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, Capacitve Display 1280 x 720, ... )
At the moment the android car stereo for me should at least be able to use sygic, play music from the memory and use the radio. But there should also be the possibility to get a better android version in future.
Perhaps it would be the best to buy a tablet, disassemble it and build the parts into a car stereo case.
