In terms of the car PC genre, Parrot won CES hands down. The Asteroid 2DIN was lightning fast, capacitive touch, and had everything you'd need. It runs android of course, but they didn't stop there. Instead of letting it be as ASOP as possible they truly built a front end system around it, complete with their own open API for apps which will specifically run on this system. I got a chance to get some real time on the device as well as speak 1 to 1 with Rue from Parrot about the devices application interface. What's amazing to me is the 2DIN is half the depth of your average car stereo, so there shouldn't be any problems getting this thing installed in a double DIN.

Even MORE impressive to me, not necessarily as a car PC guy, but an automotive guy, was the single DIN system. It has most all the features of the two DIN, but without the touchscreen. The control knob does an excellent job of moving you through menus, and it too has an open API which allows devs to harness the power of android. All that power for only $349US!

Should also note that their array microphones, included in both of these asteroid systems, worked perfectly in the LOUD main CES show hall, even with Rue's heavy french accent.

I've got a bunch of pics of the device, as well as some vids, but haven't had time to get all my pics organized.

It looks like you are jailed inside of the Parrot app, which takes away the entire point of it being an Android device IMO.

I was thinking about waiting for the 2DIN but I'm sure the price tag is going to be out of reach for me. That's why I ended going with a tablet retrofit.

the parrot unit was definately intriguing when i checked it out, i wasn't able to play around with it cause it froze up on me but it was definately a clean simple interface. only concern was if it will support all my favorite apps natively that i would like to impliment such as torque, ionroad and others such as trapster or 3rd party navigation apps for the users preference.

i never personally understood the purpose of the single DIN unit, the whole idea of porting android to the car for me at least is the full touch visual experience of the applications and not having them locked down to a manufacturers specified list of API's on a tiny screen that isn't easily readable. it's unfortunate but so far with this unit being available for some time already they still only have 5 applications available. hopefully support will pick up once other units are released but i'm sure application developers have a hard time wanting to port and provide support for their apps on another API.

Why is this unit not more popular. What am I missing?

I can tell you why they aren't popular, because Parrot really isn't marketing them. I saw the units again an CES this year, and they were still awesome. I just don't hear anything that indicates they wish to sell a bunch. And instead of marketing the Android components of the system like they did last year, they announce apps in the "asteroid" market. All the apps for the device have to be in that marketplace and designed for the asteroid unit to function. That severely limits the system if you ask me. They have also jumped $100 in price since I last checked them out.

If you read around you'll find that you can sideload just about any android app onto the HU without rooting. I'm still in shock that the carpc and tablet crowd haven't swarmed to this HU. The most talk about it is on the XDA forum.
