    This is awesome! I am planning on doing the exact same thing to my 09 Jetta SE. The only thing that I would want to do differently is not have the head unit behind the tablet. I was thinking about buying a cheap 4 channel amp and putting that in the trunk. Any words of advice for someone doing it on the same model car as you?

    This is brilliant, I remember the days of building small PCs/power supplies/bodging rubbish touchscreens/skinning Windows etc - this install has inspired me to emulate it!
    How is the GPS performance of the tablet whilst tucked away in the dash? Does it get a decent fix..?
    I've currently got a nice (but old) Sony CDX-NC9950 (with the NVX-HC1 navi addon) but I'm going to ditch this in favour of your setup (The MEXBT3900U - hopefully it's compatible with my Sony RM-X2S stalk controller - does your headunit it have a stalk controller input?) - I've just pre-ordered the Nexus 7 tablet (I was going to order one anyway - amazing value at 159 for 8gb or 199 for 16gb) so I'll basically have the same setup, but with the Nexus. Good work!
    Speed camera detector for Windows, can work alongside any other GPS application(s);

    Coolio. Yeah I took my fam on a road trip to San Diego and it was cool to have my hotspot on so my son can use his netbook plus we could stream Netflix. The google navugation is awesome. I'm driving around town like I know where I'm going.

    I learned that I can have music playing and the nav will pause the music in between instructions. It's cool.

    What app are you using for your hot spot? I have this app called SVTP that I downloaded from Google Play, and it works well. Only think I'm dealing with is my phone gets a little warm when I have it on for too long. But I've had it on and my daughters have streamed netflix on their kindle fires, and I've played pandora all at the same time and it wasn't laggy or glitchy or anything.

    never tried SVTP but i've found with my galaxy nexus that the built in hotspot works with a tasker macro as long as it's rooted, and actually any macro style app works with it.

    How exactly did you do the fascia for the tablet? I am looking to do the same thing for my 09 Jetta SE, so i value your opinion highly since we have the same application. The only difference is that Im going to try to make mine so that I can remove the tablet when I need to.

    I just use the hotspot app that came preinstalled on the tablet for Samsung. It's just called 3G hotspot.

    Sorry, I've been consumed by grad school and haven't checked back here or done too much more with the install. The fascia was actually the most time consuming part. I built it while I was away on a travel assignment last summer and had lots of free time, but unfortunately didn't take too many pictures of creating it.
    By purchasing a fascia kit made for a double din head unit, then using epoxy to glue parts that would normally screw or "click" together, I had the initial mold. After this, it was simply a matter of using my dremel to cut down what wasn't needed. As you can see from the pictures, my method of holding it all together is rather rubbish - a bunch of zip ties, though they do work.
    After August 17th I'll have a bit more time as I enter my final semester. Plan is to buy another fascia and use the original one as a mockup. This will allow me to cut much more precisely. I'll then spend some time in the hardware store and build slide rails into the top and bottom, as the charger is on the right. Finally, I'll devise some way to make the tablet fold out of the dash from the left, with hinges on the right. This is essential with the charger being on the right side. Furthermore, I've had to dismantle the dash about four times over the summer due to the tablet overheating while the car has been parked in the sun (I do ten hour clinical days and our parking lot has no cover).
    Hopefully I can make this happen by the end of September and I can post pics. All in all I still love the system - the sound is good, it performs quite well, and the navigation beats the crap outta the stock head unit.

    Yeah the double din kit definitely saved time though. It was almost a perfect fit for my tab. Just some minor mods.
