    Suitable Tablet Install?

    Hi All,

I have the following tray installed in my car (without the phone bracket) Name: avic_mount.jpg
Views: 1672
Size: 107.9 KB

However I was thinking of installing a 5-7" tablet into this space. I would like a fairly clean install which is difficult as most tablets have usb outlets at the bottom and aux out at the tops and I am looking for a horizontal install.

Does anyone have any suggestions that would lead to minimal amounts of wiring/leads showing? I was looking at the Dell Streak (usb port on bottom) however the tablet is apparently pretty poor in terms of screen.

    Thanks!

One option is to find a tablet with a good dock. Usually the docks will take care of both the USB and the aux, so you don't have to have wires sticking out of both ends. Also, the wires of the docks can be hidden behind the tablet.

Ultimately, for the cleanest install, you'll have to buy or fab up some sort of housing for that tray. If you build one, you can accommodate your wiring in it while you're building it, so everything comes out clean without any hassles.

The reviews on the screen is why i didn't get the Streak. It was cheap and had decent specs, but I didn't want to end up with a screen I couldn't use in the middle of the day.

Yea, was thinking of a housing however was thinking it was going to get a bit bulky. Think I might try and fab a dock which could be an option. Have any suitable tablet recommendations? Was thinking of a budget Chinese tablet.

Most tablets dock in portrait mode which is a shame. I was trying to go through a list of 7" ones in my head and they all docked in portrait: Galaxy Tab 2, Kindle Fire, HTC Flyer, Acer A100, and Nook Color/Tablet. And I did stumble across some that dock in landscape mode but they were less than impressive: Viewsonic Viewpad7 and Dell Streak 7. Maybe someone out there knows of a decent one that does dock in landscape mode but not that I know of.

Even though they dock in portrait mode, you can usually just have the screen rotate, either by default or with some modding. I know for sure people have done Galaxy Tabs with docks and had the screen do landscape just fine.

OP, I would avoid the generic tablets, to be honest. My pick right now would be the Galaxy Tab 2, or if you can wait a couple months, Google is supposed to be coming out with a Nexus tablet that's going to be around the $200 range. I picked up an HTC View, which is a nice tablet, but I do wish there was more development support for it. I may sell it and get one of the above two if things don't pick up soon. I also considered the Toshiba Thrive 7 and the Huawei Mediapad (T-Mobile Springboard), but I got a better deal on the View. The Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet are good low-cost options, but they have limitations that kept me from choosing them (Bluetooth, GPS, and low storage, plus the Nook is downright ugly).

I've tested the original Tab and the Tab 7.0. They both will dock in landscape.
