Just so you know, this has been done with the pioneer app radio. Unfortunately its currently only for iphone. the guys twitter is hackradio.me i believe. Here is a video:

I remember seeing a similar (if not the same) video a few years back where someone was able to control the iPhone with an external touchscreen. No details were given, and this video is the same. Not sure if hack or just cunning ruse. Nothing against it, but I am skeptical.
Yea, I remember that video. Got everyone excited, but turned out to be a trick. I think someone also did the same thing setting a tv up as a table and pretending it was a giant touch screen. This is a different video and different product (an actual product haha). The appradio is already setup to control input on your iphone or android tablet, this hack just exploits it. If you check out his twitter account you can find more details. Also there is a website setup for pre-ordering www.hackradio.me. Apparently his twitter said units would be shipping out in the next couple weeks. Guess we will find out if its real soon enough. Still, only for iphone...lame.
Anyone know why Sony removed the XAV-601BT from their website?
I have this head unit and love it. Has anyone started working on rooting it? If we could get this unit rooted it would be an Android based double din computer/carputer that we could do anything with for $550.
i was doing some digging and found this tonight: http://www.terminalmode.org/
apparently Mirrorlink isn't a Sony exclusive technology it's actually a industry standard for interfacing mobile devices with headunits by a organization that was started late last year and has supporting members from most of the major electonics and car manufacturers. We should start seeing a whole lot more devices (headunits and phones) supporting this as well as certified apps. Lets hope they don't lock it down too much.
I am starting to see that even though I waited for and purchased the Samsung Galaxy S3 because it supported Mirrorlink, that it does not support Mirrorlink out of the box. I am holding off on purchasing any head unit supporting Mirrorlink until I can confirm that it actually works with my phone. I'm a little peeved by the information I've been able to dig up about it.

Yeah the Galaxy S3 will support MirrorLink (ML) in the future, they will release a firmware update later this year. Seems it wasn't important enough to include this feature on the day of release.
It isn't from Sony indeed, Alpine also has a ML head unit, but I don't like the software. Kenwood and JVC are also releasing a ML head unit in the near future, you can already find some information on that. But I still like the Sony more.
Pity Pioneer is not in the ML business, I think they believe in their Appradio head units.
I'm waiting for the XAV-701HD version, this will be released somewhere next month. So I'm hoping Samsung also updated their firmware with the support for ML.
