    Android Phone

    Hi,

I'm currently looking into the potential for using an 'droid phone as a simple car pc.

Here is what i am looking to use it for:
    • Navigation
    • OBD Diag
    • Music
    • Uploading of Data (Pulled from GPS & OBD)

Now I have a few options I can either just use the droid or I could use a spare laptop I have at the moment and use the Droid as the Interface to this using an RDP Connection. (This can be done using a Hotspot on the phone, thus giving the laptop internet access and is able to upload data via this connection. My only issue I am conerned about is the 5Inch thouch screen, is there a way to make this more CarPC Friendly?

The perfect solution to this would be some sort of controller board which connects to the Droid via bluetooth/Wirelessly and i can add a few "hot Keys" IE Button one to open Navigation, button 2 for Music - this would need to be programmed.

In Summary here is what i'm looking for
A Device which allows you to control Android Phones (So I can mount this on my steering wheel).
Finally some sort of App for Android which converts the Android phone into more of a menu system with say 4/6 options on the "home screen"? I pretty much have all the Apps i require on the spare phone.

If this is not possible maybe I could use the laptop in some way?

    Regards

    Johnny

plenty of bluetooth products that mount to steering wheel and can control media (play/pause/next track/etc.) and answer/end calls. they all use a standard bluetooth interface so they should work with any phone. examples:

    http://www.hammacher.com/Product/839...FdBcMgodoDkATw

    http://www.amazon.com/Parrot-Bluetoo.../dp/B000S0THPQ

with one of the larger ones that have numeric keypads (like this...), you might could use an app like Tasker to make some of those extra buttons do other things (instead of just being a dial-pad).

there are several car home screen type apps in the play store... but why? you can customize the android desktop endlessly - just make a desktop screen with whatever app shortcuts you want. you can get a custom launcher like Nova and then you can set the size/spacing and more. most launchers will also let you "lock" the desktop - so you don't accidentally move or delete things when trying to use the touch screen in a moving car. you can of course have widgets too... the Torque OBD app will let you put float pretty much any gauge outside the app, and there are other plugins for it that give you specific widgets for the desktop. and finally, you can get an icon pack to go with the launcher so your UI looks consistent.

for example, here's an older version of my vehicle tablet's desktop:

if you definitely want a dedicated car app, search "car home" on the play store...

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....ig88.carhome3

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...nghead.carhome

Here's an older tablet desktop of mine in a trial fitting. Possibilities are very versatile...

Thanks Guys, Very helpful, and very professional. I've been running my second Android Phone for a few weeks now but now I want to "OEM" it.

What i'm now looking to do is embed my phone into the section at the top where it currently shows "Radio 1". What would be the best way to achieve this? Plastic and cut/sand? or is there some type of "putty" I could pop in and mould into shape?

    Regards

I would get a used one from the salvage yard and work with that, cutting fiberglassing/plastic welding/bondo to get the shape and look you are after. there really is no set way to do these types of mods, it usually depends on how detailed you want it. I personally am on carputer number 4 but built-in monitor has been in same place since install number 2. Good luck and post lots of pics, then you can get help as you go. SNO

Have you looked into or considered the Customgadz x2 module? You could then mount a monitor permanently and use it with PC and phone or either one. I personally have one but have not installed it yet inmy new car but it really is a good option to consider. http://www.customgadz.com/shopx/index.php

It's the 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Right now I'm looking for the Note Pro with 12.2 inch. I got used to the 10 inch, but a bigger screen would be more amazing. And the Galaxy Note are up to now the only tablets with a real split screen: Samsung its Multiwindow. With the Galaxy Note Pro are 3 and 4 Apps at the same time possible; maybe music player, navigation and foto player.

I'm sure there are ways to do that with non Galaxy tabs. The LG's have a windowed mode for some of their apps as well. And it seems like not all apps support these kind of features.
