android-wifi-tether + AutoAP -- Always available internet?
For the number of people I regularly come across with android devices these days, and the more technically inclined people I find who use them, I'm surprised to find this section of the forums as empty as they are.
Anyhow thought Id share a concept I'm going to be implementing eventually in my car.
I've got a home wifi mesh of many Linksys WRT54G and WAP54G wireless routers, I'm also in the process of adding a secondary wifi network of WRT160N routers for my Wireless-N devices. In setting up all these devices I'd stumbled across AutoAP, a script for DD-WRT routers to automatically connect to any available(successful) wifi internet connection and relay it's own connection. I'm not yet sure if it supports connecting to Ad-Hoc networks, since I haven't looked at it in a while. So the plan is to throw one of these in my car for my carPC to get online. Why is this android relevant?
I've been grandfathered into an unlimited data plan with my AT&T Captivate(which gets great reception on my regular commute and in my office) and mixing that with the free(root required) android tether app "android-wifi-tether" gives me a free unlimited cellular data connection(confirmed that data transfer via this app is not detected as a tethering connection by watching my phone bill for a while and using it to specific monthly amounts) for the road. The idea after adding an AutoAP is to be able to sit down in the car, open the app and enable the wireless tethering connection and drive without having to press any other buttons. From there the AutoAP autoconnects to my newly formed Ad-Hoc wifi connection and the car is online able to do whatever I expect it to do. A dream would be to get the phone to automatically do this when it detects the car's bluetooth mac address is in range, then I don't have to do a damned thing at all.
This is a small part of a larger setup I'm going to be working on to improve the automation and ability of my CarPC. Anyhow if anyone beats me to trying this idea out please let me know, I'll probably post something in time about my progress since this is going with a larger concept.
