There is a special expansion port already capable of steering control, we just haven't made the little adapter board yet. You can also connects heaps of external buttons if you like.

Shipping will be by the end of the month, just waiting on one type cable to arrive.

Thanks for the quick reply, can the heaps of buttons be connected straight to the board or do they need the adaptor board?

All the optional buttons can be connected directly to the touchscreen adapter board. It has a 2-wire analog port that allows you to connect buttons with a resistor. So this is already implemented and can actually be assigned to steering controls. The firmware is not quite ready for that yet though. You can have "back" "home" "settings" for the moment if your device doesn't have onscreen softkeys.

I would like to use a Benz type rotary knob. A 3d mouse like the type made by 3dconnexion would be good. Would the connection allow such a mouse to function.

Hi, I recently purchased a 2013 Passat (NMS) and it came with the RCD-510 headunit from factory. I pulled it out yesterday and it doesn't have any special connector on the back for backup camera or extra video inputs that is seen behind the RNS-510.

(1): Is it possible to open the unit and solder to get RGB video inputs to the screen. This way I can avoid replacing it unnecessarily. (I can take pictures of the inside if you want if that helps)
(2): If (1) is not possible and I need a special video converter like this to retain the factory HU, let me know. Also how would the MimicsX2 module connect to the converter?
(3): If (1) & (2) are not possible, I would consider purchasing one of these three units OEM looking non-vw headunits off ebay Unit1 Unit2 Unit3. Which of these units would you recommend.

Also, would I need Type "A" switch or Universal Single? Thank you

I also have a rcd-510 and I may be doing this mod. You will need the adapter like in option 2 to get video to the screen. The mimics will just hijack the touch screen controls and not worry about how video is displayed. I don't know the difference between type A and universal either. Also you will need to tell them you have a VW head unit with 8 pin touchscreen when you order mimics

Would a rear camera be possible too? Also, I didn't find any text field when placing the order to specify the 8 pin touchscreen. were you able to do it when you ordered?
