Has anyone taken a look at the temperature specifications?

Operational 32 to 95 Fahrenheit and Storage 4 to 113 Fahrenheit.

Seems a bit narrow to be used for an automotive application. Guess this rules out leaving it in the car, or using it until your car warms up in the winter, or in the summer without an AC unit. Put that in your windshield without AC and see if it doesn't overhead... of course not that you can see around it when it's in that location anyway.

I hope no-one minds, I have constructed a helpful visual aid that hopefully shows what a catastrophically stupid idea this is.

According to apple, the ipad is 7.47"x9.56"

I managed to find a notebook that has almost those exact specifications:

Holding it up in the middle of my windshield, on its side:

or the same way up as the FABULOUS product above:

If I shove it right in the corner [so far that I can't even reach it while driving]:

This has been your helpful "let's get some perspective" PSA for today.

Well, all we have to do is download the Frisbee app and use the iPad to play catch with our dogs, lol.

    Couple problems with your logic....

Flash is resource intensive and therefore a waste...
*no HDMI/VGA out* the dock supports HD video out unlike iphone or ipod touch it is true "monitor out* not just for videos

adapters for usb* I kind of agree on, but then again USB 3.0 standard is out and why put 2.0 in when it is headed out. also one connection with multiple uses is very space and component saving, thus better design and less to go wrong.

And everyone complaining about *no voice* must not have heard that AT&T is allowing VOIP on 3g network unless At&t blocks it specifically on iPad... personally I wouldn't mind VOIP at $30 month considering what I was paying for my iphone voice and data plan...

Not to mention I am seriously wanting to use my iPhone, and iPad as remotes for my MacMini based Car PC...!

To do that though you need another product, then you need a converter to use it to attach to the car pc screen, if you use it that way.

USB 3 may be out, but everyone is not going to get rid of their 2.0 devices to get 3.0. Its going to be a good long while before it catches on. I'm sure staying with 2.0 since my setup has 30 devices!

Even with VOIP, its using the AT&T network. The network is already slow with people having drops. AT&T even banned apps from using the network, one for example being Sling Player. They just now finally lifted that ban because so many people complained. Who the h3ll has ever heard of a carrier banning certain activity. I understand a limit on bandwidth, but to say, no you cant use this app is terrible.

great demo!-- the ipad will still obstruct a large part of the view even in a vehicle with a large enough windshield (think dodge sprinter van )

i can see the articles already "man drives through factory, claimed ipad blocked view"...

doesn't usb 3.0 have some wierd connections for it?

i really think that 2.0 is fine for most external devices-- heck, some devices don't really need anything faster than 1.1 for the amount of data they are using...

It uses A-GPS for the 3G model. This a real GPS solution. There is a lot of confusion on how A-GPS works.

    What it does is
    1) attempt to get a quick location via cell towers to help triangulate the position.
    2) if it doesn't get a cell lock, it relies on the built-in gps chip.

ALSO, those are not real picts. It is clearly photoshop. I know because one of those images is from Gizmodo which had a mocked-up iPad during the rumors day. Specifically, the image with the Bryan Ferry on the coverflow is a fake.

Basically what it does it help speeds up the warm-acquisition time. It does not need cell service to operate.

I know this because I took my iPhone to Costa Rica. I had no cell signals whatsoever. I only used my iPhone for the GPS, reading PDF (for maps) and it works just as fine as my Windows Mobile phone that had cell coverage.

USB 3.0 (like all usb specs) is backwards compatible so you can upgrade all, or only a few components. The big advantage (other then speed) is more power available per port which could help eliminate the need for all those powered hubs (and the associated wiring).
The connector is different internally (an extra four wires) but its identical in shape and allows connecting the old usb 2.0 wires without any problems.
