If I'm not mistaken, the new Infiniti M37/56 has a 9" OEM Nav screen, upgraded from 7". The same goes for the BMW 5 and 7series, with the pro nav system. I wouldn' be surprised if the new for 2011 Mercedes E-class also has a bigger screen.

Years ago (pre-2004), the only way to get a bigger screen in your car was modding it with a lilliput or a Xenarc. Even double din units had 5.6" or 6.5". There were no 7" OEM Nav screens pre 2004 IIRC, and a big thing about modding your car was fitting a large screen.

Why stop at 7"? I think the iPad is just the right size.

I don't care for OEM looks anymore, but if I did, I wouldn't mind leaving an iPad in the car permanently. It would be great to hide that large bezel anyway. Why remove it? Just J/b it and sync wirelessly.

so can you see the file system on the iPad or do you have to do the annoying "sync" using another computer ?

Nah, you have to sync. You can see the file system (using ifile, ssh), and copy songs and play from there (another app to import into itunes), but storage is low, so I haven't look into that closely.

I've been using ifile and it works great, but it's definitely a shame that you have to use a file browser to view it. In addition, by jail breaking, I can navigate it on the Mac and copy/remove files at will.

::shudders at the thought of using iTunes::

So the iPad needs to be Jailbroken just to see the file system? You guys honestly consider this a "computer" ?

FWIW I just drove from Boston to Baltimore for the event tomorrow... a lovely 8.5 hour traffic filled drive... with the iPad playing music almost continuously. Used 6% battery life. Say what you will, but that's freakin' impressive.

(Before you ask, the screen was primarily sleeping and I wasn't connected to my Kiwi Wifi network or my MiWi tether)

So, the iPad is clearly not a CarPC, at least not in this version.

Maybe the ones coming down the pike will be. Google's tablet and the MSI Windpad are rumored to have HDMI out. If Android is used, then we might end up in app heaven.

If I can get quality video, 5.1 audio, and access to outboard media files, then I'm happy.

I am willing to wait 6 months before I decide to build a new CarPC because the missing link we have all been looking for might be arriving.

    Check this one out:

    LOL.

quality video: you can now play any video format, check
5.1 audio: yep, optical audio out (I believe it's 5.1, someone correct me if I'm wrong), check
access to all of your server hosted files, check.

    I'm confused.
