iPad gets fitted into car dashboard, makes you an instant carpooling superstar

Let's face it, the Toyota Tacoma has a long way to go before being considered glamorous, or even remotely cool, but jacking an iPad into its console might be a good start. That's what the good people of SoundMan Car Audio over in California have done with a little bit of elbow grease and knowhow, and we've got video of how it all came together after the break. They've yet to wire it up to the Audison Bit One sound processor and McIntosh MMC406M 6-channel amp that are intended to receive the iPad's audio goodies, but the important stuff of fitting and molding the dash to its new 9.7-inch centerpiece is all done. Alright, so the glossy black screen and the demure grey plastic don't exactly sing in harmony, but surely the funky aesthetics can be forgiven for the sake of accessing all your media on the move. Right, dawg?

i am still laughing at the teeny tiny icon sizes-- just try to imagine changing songs-- it is almost like performing surgery in a rv, while driving down the grand canyon...

no big deal when stationary, but nearly impossible at 50mph in traffic.

What? so you are saying that something designed to be used with your captive attention is difficult to use when attention should be minimal? This rings true to me for some reason ...

    However, it is trendy.

LOL at all the comments. i agree with all of them too..... So the iPads aren't removable? I thought the whole point was so that it can be taken out. This is funny cause most people install a CarPC to not be obvious.

PS: So to go back to home screen the driver has to reach all the way to the passenger side?

i think that the location of the home button was a poor choice on the installers end--with the iphone, you can rotate it either way-- and i assume that the ipad has the same type of feature.

i also think it is crummy of the installers to get the ipad working, but not the audio yet-- kind of like a show car without a motor...

lots more to say, but i'll leave it at this for now...

I think computer/screen integration is the way of the future, it eliminates a lot of issues in many different custom install scenarios. No longer do you have to figure out how to run all those wires, cooling, hard drive bumps and SPACE. Plus for people like me who run home automation, I'm looking for something now where I can replace my ADT alarm pad by the front door with a touchscreen. My biggest problem is running wires to the computer downstairs but if I had an iPad (or the far superior Crunchpad), it could interact over Wi-Fi no problemo.

Yea but if the screen breaks, you cant use the setup because its all in one. If the computer breaks then you cant use it because its all in one. Also its easy to steal if you leave it in the car, so you have to constantly take it out. My install may have been a b!=Ch, but its the last time I have to touch it, unless I want to upgrade. With the iPad, once you have to upgrade you have to change the whole unit and how you docked it into the car if the new version is different. I rather have the install I have and simply replace what is broken, rather then not being able to use it at all. I do agree that this works in home automation, don't agree about security though because if the power goes out, the wifi goes out too... now you have no control. Also a much better item then the iPad can usually be used. Like a high powered tablet, thats an all in one, that does more!

Okay seriously, how are these issues any different from a car PC install?

Yes, my computer and my screen are not all-in-one but if the computer breaks, I'm out of business. It costs more than the iPad to replace. If the screen breaks, I'm out of business. It costs about 2/3 what an iPad costs.

I agree that it's pretty stupid to mount that thing in there without being able to remove it, but I would point out that it was mounted in the space of 1 day. A more careful installation would probably be able to work out a docking mechanism that would allow it to be removed for security.

And in fact, if you think it through, which they didn't because they wanted to get the most number of hits on their website as possible rather than make a killer iPad install, they don't have a way to sync the iPad with new music because you have to take it out of the car to connect it to the computer.

I can certainly understand you not liking the iPad because it is shiny and has an Apple logo on it but I really don't see how installing $500 worth of electronics in your car is somehow stupider than installing $1,000 in electronics solely because the $1000 package isn't bundled together with the screen.
