Plus whoever is making a font end can make it as big or as friendly as possible. The thing about the current apps, the multi touch to me is much safer. Take maps for example. To zoom in on say garmin mobile, you have to find the plus button or the scrollbar. On iPad you just pinch, which you can easily do without looking. And in that motion you can move the map while pinching, so you really only need 2 fingers, and don't need to look.

Ill give it that it needs system wide voice control. But it does have system wide voiceover, if thats at least a step in the right direction.

Yea but i've seen a quite a few of your front ends and being able to manipulate with one or two fingers, without the need to located a button is far safer. IMO

IMO the issue lies with the applications. I'm willing to bet neat 100% of the applications written for the iphone/ipod touch/etc that run on the ipad are written with the intent of having the user focused on the screen... as is normally the case for a phone app. Sure, once people start writing car-centric apps it will get better, but at the moment it's really not made for glance-and-tap use.

This is an issue using any app written for a phone, in the car.

Well yea, i mean you don't just throw windows xp in there and run real player. Someone makes an "at a glance" friendly app (i.e a front end).

So this point is frivolous and should be removed form the list. This thing is brand new, there will be car friendly apps.

I agree with you on the button icons. They are big and more then enough. I disagree on the multi touch stuff. Why would you have to or want to pinch the screen while driving? With CF, I hit a button and it does its thing. If I want to zoom on a map, i hit a plus sign. What makes me having to concentrate on pinching things make it safer? I think your idea on this is very flawed. Please prove me wrong, set up your iPad and demonstrate, while driving how multi touch will help.

PS: also once the apps are loaded alot of those big icons turn into smaller font.... So its only some stuff big, then some stuff small.

as soon as the 3g pad comes out ill make a video. But i mean, just try it in front of you. Look away, and try to make a pinch motion on your screen. There is no way you will miss your giant screen.

Now try turning away, and hitting say the start button, or something near there. I mean it requires a lot more concentration to pin point a location, then it does when the entire screen is the touch location. Lets say ok screw multitouch you can double tap instead. The button is 8 inches, vs the cf button being what maybe 1 inch.

WAITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. Your talking like we use Windows straight up. 96% of us use a front end and dont interact with the Windows GUI.

YOu have to clarify because im confused now. Are you talking about to start up CF or when your already in CF? I dont know about other but CF starts up on my system by default. It is the core of setup (I actually built my car pc around CF) and without it, I do agree, any time you have to interact with Windows, its a pain in the @$$. I havent had a chance to play with Win 7, so all my talk is about XP. I have seen people use strictly Windows Media Center and its super touch friendly.

Well you can't compare CF to iPad because iPad doesn't have a front end yet. You can only compare windows to iphone OS.

Now, the point still stands for buttons in CF. Not as much though, because those buttons are pretty big, but they aren't the entire screen size. My point is that its much easier to hit an 8 inch button than any button in CF or Windows. Like the old streedeck, you used gestures on the entire screen and the whole point of that was so you didn't have to look at the interface.

But then again you don't need a multi touch surface to do gestures, but you can do a lot more with a multitouch screen.

Well I cant comment on this then because CF is the only way I use my Car PC. I use system shell mode to mask all traces of Windows. In fact, can we even compare Windows with iPhone OS? We would have to compare WinMo 6.5, which seems to boast larger buttons, also Android does too.

Thats what I am trying to say, you will never use multitouch and when you do, I dont think it will be useful.

If you're going to bring it down the whole "Wait for a frontend or a bunch of different car friendly apps to be written for it" road, how is it any better than any other tablet besides multitouch then?

The other tablets already have frontends which run on them that provide all these services.

its not better than any other multitouch tablet. I guess aside from mobileme integration, which im sure im the only on this forum who cares about lol. And I guess speed, i mean, my iPad is quicker than any computer i've used mac, pc, linux or phone software. Well i guess android is right up there in speed with their snapdragon.

    -- edit --
anyone else think snapdragon is an awesome name?

That is true. That slipped my mind. Infact compared to other tablets, as far as power, the iPad is at the bottom of the list. Where all starting to go in circles, I think what we need is a demenstration of someone using the iPad in real time, with it so called being easily installed, and using multitouch while driving.

PS: Of course its OS is going to be faster, its made to run fast, most phone OSes are. I guess another question is do you give up power and upgradbility, or do you go with upgade lacking, non multitasking, but fast stable OS.
