Thread: ipad build

Okay, apparently you can plug an HD in via 30pin-to-USB, but there's no software yet to recognize it. So in theory a media player could do it, other than iTunes. I'm looking for an app like that for a jailbroken iPhone, so far, no luck. I'll keep looking.

(I've seen tons of people trying to turn the iphone itself into an external HD...am I missing something or that's just plain stupid? Why? external HD are dirty cheap...)

When the first people were putting carPCs together, installs were incredibly difficult. You're now expecting a bolt-in solution less than 2 weeks from launch? The aftermarket will get there, but there isn't going to be any specific solution released this quick. Hell, lead times on mass manufactured things are typically 6 weeks for initial approval batches! What you're saying is a "ton of work" is a ton of work -- it's a custom install. Whether you're using a windows based carPC, a mac mini, an android OS system... they all take work.

Once the logistics are in place, the iPad will take SIGNIFICANTLY less work to install than pieced systems. It really can't be argued. It will involve:

Buying a bezel/mounting solution
Buying the iPad and iPad dock
Splicing into a +V source from your car
Buying a PSU

That's it.

Please read what others on the "anti iPad" side have posted. They are being very constructive. Your black cloud approach to this topic I can only account to being somehow oddly self-serving.

I gave you a golden opportunity with my earlier post. Take the features list, add what you want in there. Rank systems 1-3. Quantitatively describe your system and show why it's so awesome and all other opinions are so bad.

The iPad isn't a finished product. That's what apps are for. That's what this community is for.

Why am I destructive? I'm just blunt and speak my mind, lol. I am simply sharing my views. I cant contribute to a product that I don't think will do well in a Car PC environment, which I take very seriously.

Like I said before, don't take my comments seriously, its my view, and the point of the forum is to share those views even if its the so called "black cloud route" (by the way I like that, I think I am going to ask the mods to change my avatar slogan to that). I do not have any problems with all things Apple at all. I have said that the Apple OSX is impressive, that if i were to say its bad, I'd be lying. I also stated that me myself was buying an iPod Touch later. My view is simply that I dont think an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad are good for the car and that Safari is cr@p. So don't put words in my mouth. I may be the bad guy, but I'm not that bad, lol, but your trying to paint me that way.

When did I say it has to be a bolt on solution? I never said that. My point is don't claim the iPad is so easy to install when it really isn't, its just about as much work as a so called pieced setup. I'm sorry you didn't get that point even though I did explain it in detail some time earlier. I know installs aren't pop in and go, I should know, mine is going on 2 1/2 Years.

Unfortunately I cant help if I may seem negative, its in my DNA. If it makes you feel better, I'll give you a huge.

granted, i haven't looked into it much farther than these forums, but i was under the impression that external usb hard drives would be readable by the ipad-- if they are not, that would definatly make a beginners project a whole lot harder to add media(i assume that one of the only options left would be a wireless storage solution, and that could be tough for some to setup).

for the iphone hdd thing-- i did this yesterday-- i was modifying bitmaps for some software-- and my photoshoping, and demo system are separate, and got sick of taking my flash drive back and forth, so i used the iphone hdd app to transfer the files.

it really isn't any faster, just a little different, imo..

But if one uses the 30 pin for power only, how could one connect accessories while charging, like a usb drive or whatever? I guess Apple assumes too much here.

I use the $50 Apple A/V cable with iPhone and it gives you stereo output, NTSC video output and a USB jack for power. I use a cigarette lighter power plug with a USB port on it for power.

Not sure how the iPad does this with multiple devices. Maybe you can hub it?

Cruiser, I got nothing against you, and I do take everything posted with a grain of salt. I work with a guy Jim who I get along with great, but is basically on everyone's black list for the simple reason that, when given the options on how to say something, he'll always choose the abrasive route.

Saying, "I don't like this solution because it can't do X Y Z. If someone could figure that out, it would make a good carPC for those with certain needs." conveys a much different message than, "That's bad" or your hinge point about "stop saying it can multitask when it can't!!!!!!!!!!" Apple has clearly said that it can:

LOL, ask him if hes a Capricorn. We tend to be that way. I know you have nothing against me, just like I have nothing against you or anyone else. Just like most of you think my install is insane, psychotic, and just not practicle, I think the iPad is also that way. I guess I like hot debate. Thats all I can say. I always choose the abrasive because it makes people think, do/make things better, to prove me wrong. Guess what it works wonders, sometimes negativity can be beneficial and I am sure I will be proved wrong on my comments by someone that read my comment and said hey, hes wrong, let me prove it. I guess my biggest issue is that Apple makes everything proprietary to them. Making people have to buy things to get normal functionality, when it should have been that way out the box, like the Android Tablet is. Multitouch, USB, Web Cam, and the list goes on. Also ontop of that it is versatile with what can be used on it. If people want Android they can, if they want windows, they can. It can multitask without software multitasking.

I tried to show some of my sensitive side, lol..... Anyways, I cant wait to see what iPad users come up with. Then we can start doing comparisons to ease of use and functionality.

So when you walk away for a day, and the thread is 3 pages longer, you almost don't want to sit and read through it. OR you find things you want to comment on but the conversation has moved on...

Anyway, glad you two resolved your differences. I was about to branch this thread off to a curiser vs jr forum dedicated soley to constructive flaming.

So bugbytes sarcasm is right, people are apple heads and will buy anything that steve ****s out just cuz it comes with not 1 but 2 apple stickers.

That being said, that android tablet would need to be a lot thinner to be a viable solution. If were talking in and out of car experience, something as big as a laptop doesn't cut, might as well be a laptop?

What i wish you could do, use the ipad as a mtouch screen for my macbook pro. Then create a docking station inside my dash, slide my laptop in a thin hole in my dash to dock, then be able to use the iPad screen as the main screen for laptop.

so... someone make that happen and get back to me lol
