Are you seriously calling this acceptable? instead of plugging in a camera to transfer photos, or a thumbdrive to transfer music or a standalone usb harddrive you have to result to an expensive nas solution?!

List of things my carPC does that an ipad or other replacement device should be able to do:
    • multiple usb ports to plug in and transfer any type of files I would like
    • an interface designed to be used while driving which minimizes distractions and alters its behavior depending on whether i'm in motion or not.
    • standalone navigation (no internet connection required)
    • play any media format I might use including mp3, mp4, wmv, mkv, flac and a few others
    • support multiple screens (so the rear passengers can also have the carpc experience without the expense of a separate device)
    • Support dvd playback
    • Global speech recognition (control anything and everything by voice)
    • Rear-view camera that automatically switches when in reverse
    • Hd radio, xm/sirius radio, $10 obdii connection
    • Stream and control pandora or slacker radio from my phone (instead of paying for a separate internet connection)
    • Look oem enough and hard enough to steal that its not an easy target for thieves

iphone OS 4 still doesn't actually offer multitasking as developers have been asking for. It's a list of seven things apple have decided are allowed in their walled garden. Push notifications wasn't a satisfactory answer when people wanted multitasking, but suddenly "pandora will work" or "flickr can finish downloading one photo" is a beautiful panacea? Come on.

Rev can log your journeys right now. It can't log your journeys when it's "multitasking". This is a direct impact on people on this forum.

This is not multitasking. Don't bother to reply "waa waa battery life" or any of the other justifications that apple spout; the longest battery life in the world doesn't help if I can't actually do what I want with a device.

Wow, you guys brought up alot of good points. I especially like the stone illustration. I am picturing if we were to all have a meet and this topic came up, they would have to call in international peace keepers and tons of riot police.

So lets revise than. Is it a good carcomputer for someone who
    - is basic
    - doesn't want a big install
    - doesn't want to worry about parts

    the iPad offers
    - all in one solution
    - gps, turn by turn with audio + lots of location apps
    - safe, because of one handed gestures, you can do anything with 1 hand
    - your whole music library
    - obd2 stats, via wireless adhoc and an app
    - web surfing for when parked - being safer because the browser is touch friendly
    - keep bookmarks, contacts, calenders, email in sync over the air (if u have mobile me)
    - video playback when not driving
    - larger display than most average car pc screens. ( i know there are 10 inch screens)
    - voice to text when needed for text entry (an app called dragon something or other is great)

so maybe its just for your 1st car pc, where you don't have to do a lot of work?

    I'd agree with this.

I'm sure you've all had many friends go for a ride in your car and give the "wow, how can I do that?" feedback once they play around with your carPC. You explain it, give costs, and, more often than not, your friend's carPC voyage ends right there.

Having this as a gateway drug into our world could be a good thing. "You just dock your iPad, run these apps, and connect it here into your amp" will go over better than "Take your old computer, tear it down to this, download and configure winamp and RR, buy a GPS antenna and software, buy boomzbox, buy a touchscreen, crack it out of its case and fit it into an enclosure or fabricate your own, wire your 12V pulse line to your power supply for the computer, splice in your reverse camera here, etc etc etc"

Highest end? No, but getting someone into the game for $630 (assuming they get the GPS model) with little to no extra work definitely has a place in carputing.

This is a good entry into the world of carpc's, for the type of people who really shouldn't be installing carpc's; the kind of people who blindly use technology and really don't understand it at all. Compared to other tablets, the ipad just doesn't measure up in the carpc world. Sure it's an awesome ipod touch-like tablet... but it's very limiting for a carpc. The money would be better spent on a cheap tablet, that is way more expandable. (See my reasons above).

You can get a relatively small install for a beginner PC, even you guys sell it! I just bought a D945GSEJT to start building my cluster PC setup and its cheap, and is fairly powerful for being a single core Atom processor. I was expecting this board to slow, but I was shocked to see that it was a fairly zippy PC if you don't go over board. I don't know what Mp3Car sells it for but you can get it for $99, 2GB RAM for $45, screen for $145, a 20GB HDD for $11.94, and a small PSU, infact all it has to do is supply regulated 12V power and the onboard PSU does everything. It will maybe come out to the price of an iPad, maybe less, but you wont have limitations and you wont be held hostage by Apple and you wont have to Jail Break to try not to be held hostage. I mean all this stuff you mentioned another PC can do. Only thing it doesn't have is MT screen (which I think is useless in a car), The BT solution may be better, and thats about it. I know this is an opinion but I think giant screens are a waste. They distract easily and its just overkill (I know I'm the master of overkill but I am saying for standard installs). Only time I think a huge screen is needed is for rear seat entertainment and thats so it feels more like a shared experience.

    I 100% agree with Malcom....

Don't forget the iPad isn't just for car use, as most other carPCs are. I know people that are considering a carPC and are also considering an iPad, but didn't immediately link the two. This kills two birds with one stone (look! the stone multitasked! )

What're the chances we get a front end for an iPad by the time 4.0 migrates over?

Huge screens and 10inch screens are different. I had to stop using my iPhone as a GPS because 3.5 inches is too small. And im not about to go spend $300 on a unitasker like a 4.5 inch garmin. Now a 7 or 8 inch gps, ok thats probably a good size.

So, other than the hobby, what are the main reasons for a pc in the car?
