Now how good is streaming if you're on AT&T 3G and you're limited to 20MB files (about an album worth, or less?). You do need to hook up an external HD. I wonder if it has enough juice on the USB dongle thingy to power on my FreAgent Go 650GB, for instance.

I was just using that as one example. When I first got my iPad, the 1st thing I did was fired up SSH, VNC to see if I could play off my Linux server without synching. I logged in and moved some files over to my webserver and it worked. Took less than a minute. The power of cloud computing.

There are many apps that have file sharing like Files, Drop Box. They use either WebDav, Samba or whatever. Since I have the files on a remote server, the Ipad will play whatever without the need for synching. You can get one of those USB wi-fi NAS and store all your media on it and the Ipad will have access to them. I have about 4 terabyte of content accessible from my Ipad. It works. You can put a 1 terabyte NAS in your trunk and you are good to go.


AT&T does have an unlimited bandwidth for $30 a month. $15 for 250MB.

And I'm with ya. I want to see apps come out that are DESIGNED to take advantage of the large display and have FE type features. We don't know what's on the way into the app store, but you'll at least agree that the possibilities are there, yes?

I have an iPad since launch day (work supplied for me to evaluate). It is instantly on when I press it. I also get more than 10 hours of hard use. Read any of the reviews - USToday, WSJ, NYTimes, everyone is getting more than 10 hours of real usage.

I let my son play w/ it. I had a bunch of Thomas videos and it streamed off the my server via wifi playing H.264 for 5-6 hours. I still had 60% battery usage. So it was using wifi, full brightness decoding HD video.

That is impressive.

You don't even need storage. Just put everything up on a server and let Safari handle the playback.

UGH, now its the battery usage thats being used. Listen if I took my HTC Touch Pro, threw on a big screen on it and threw on a way bigger battery, my d@mn phone will get 10 hours also. Remember you are comparing phone technology vs PC technology. It seems that all the people defending this this seem to forget to mention that. Also in my opinion the battery life doesnt matter because all our setups use PSU to power everything. If I can be so bold to say, ive read alot of reviews that claim the iPad can not be recharged via a PC USB port because it requires more then the port can throw out. Its either power brick or USB hub that can charge this thing!

So to get video I have to install NAS into my car? That is not cheap at all. Also isnt very practical for a so called beginner that everyone seems to claim the iPad is good for.

Safari!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me! I will say thats one of Apple's worse softwares ever made! It feels so ancient and anytime I have had issues with customers, I have bluntly told them, if you cant browse the net correctly on my system, its because your using a Mac combined with Safari! Usually me getting them to install either FireFox or Google Chrome will fix 99.999999% of the issues. LOL OMG, you said Safari, even the icon for safari looks outdated.............

LOL, I swear when I saw this one, I was getting ready to go to bed from working all day but this comment woke me right up again!

Thats odd. Safari and Chrome have the same rendering engine. In fact, safari and chrome are the only 2 browsers to work with youtube's html5 beta. more in fact, safari and chrome support all css declarations 100% and safari has a huge array of proprietary css commands that make animation awesome when developing an application just for safari.

The ONLY problem i've seen people have with safari is that you need IE for quickbooks. What are you doing, or you clients doing that safari can't handle?

I don't know what you're surfing, but I've never had an issue using Safari for this.

If the iPad needs 12V to charge, then fine, we give it 12V. If it needs 5, let's give it 5. You realize you can build a voltage regulator for... errr... $3? Simple circuit to USB out. Send 12V or 5V over that, and you're in business. I don't view this as a major hurdle.

The Safari issue part of the topic.... its whats used on the iPad to surf the internet, is it not?

The point was is that battery life doesnt matter unless your sitting in a parking lot for long periods of time. Not that you can build a $3 dollar regulator for powering it. On that note, if I want to power it in the car, Im sure Apple will simply make the the $3.00 regulator your talking about and sell it for a mere $150.00, just like they do with everything else.

Yes, just as it is on the iPhone. I haven't heard a complaint on Safari once. I'm really just confused by how vehemently you are putting it down. I prefer Firefox, but I wouldn't have classified Safari as one of the issues-to-fix or shortcoming of the iPad.

Maybe its just my experience. I have never had luck with it, only seems to cr@p out, or be slow. Doesn't seem feature rich at all. I will say Google Chrome also isn't feature rich, but it does have a few things that set it apart from Safari. You can customize the GUI, and it is 100% faster then Safari. I mean you click go and your stuff is loaded up. Safari, you hit go, and you wait, then it loads up. Maybe the iPhone is different? As far as clients I will say that its a wifi combined with safari issue. For some odd reason when combined, people can not use the network. Even iPhones have this issue, it took me a good 10 minutes to get it to work all 3 times that I tried with different phones. Basically I have a gateway that is installed, when people connect to my open network, they are forced through the gateway and have to log in. For some reason Apple products will not get the log in page instead they get a page not found and will constantly get knocked off the network. Maybe it could be I simply don't know enough about the products that I am not seeing what is the issue instantly. I know Vista had an issue where if you hit public, it kicks you off the network, you set it to home and it works flawlessly, maybe iPhone, Safari have a similar option?
