Thread: Front End App for iPad

Not sure if you're even considering this for a first release, but on the matter of the "backend" server that would handle all of the things that the ipad couldn't do (ie: interface with unsupported peripherals like sirius, fm, etc). What I think would be a good solution is to create a framework where others could add "plugins" to it. So say you have a base framework, and others could write plugins for support of other devices, which then would obviously communicate with the ipad over ip in a standard provided by the actual frontend. Just spitballing ideas. I'd really love to transition to an ipad in the car, but only if I can get the same functionality as my current carpc, or at least close to it.

Ryan711: I don't think the backend solution I'm thinking of will come in the first release, but I do plan to make it possible for additional plugins. The 2 options I'm thinking of is basically a plugin will be more like an HTML5 jquery/ajax display of whatever the plug in is, so it can be customized to the plugin creators liking, or I will come up with a way that a view will query a folder for additional plugins, and create the plugins on the device dynamically, so that it has a more native feel to it.

I'm so sorry in the delay for posting to the forum. I have been busy with family camping this past weekend and I've had other obligations (weddings, get togethers, etc) that I had to make an appearance at.

I'm working on a few more features I'd like to implement before I consider putting the app up for beta testing. The system I will be using for beta testing will only allow use of the app for 2 to 3 weeks, so I plan to release updates and other things at the end of those cycles, or I will rerelease the same one again, which will allow for an additional 2 to 3 weeks.

Its the easiest way I've found with my current client testing process that has worked well.

I have once again, based on simplicity, I have changed the way the app looks. I believe this will be simple but still have an awesome look to it. I'm focusing to get all the music controls working how I want, with the gestures, and then I will be putting out my first beta release for some input.

Just thought I would give a heads up.

So I found a decent voice kit for the iPhone/iPad and was wondering if people are interested in having voice control? I think it could be useful just want opinions from you guys. Would you use it?

The only way I would use it is if you didn't have to touch anything to make it listen for the voice commands. But I know many will want that feature even if they had to hold the button the whole time they were giving the command

It gives you both options. I would probably program it so that you have to tell it something first like "car command" so that it would know you are ready to tell it something. That way it will stop playing music or whatever may be using it at the time. I have found others and they all required you to hold and I turned them down, cause I'm the same way. The less I have to reach over and push something, the better.

Ok that definitely makes it more enticing to me although the way I am about to mount my iPad in my car I'm not sure that the mic will pick up anything any way. But I would suggest making it to where the activation command be user changeable. I can see it now "K.I.T.T. Next song"

Totally. I thought about putting K.I.T.T. in the post, just didn't know if i would get posts from people saying "you can't use that" so I figured I'd say something else. I probably could make it so you could choose from a list of options of names to use to call your car.
