I actually have access to a 3d printer. I just don't know how sturdy the parts that it makes are and if it would hold up to sliding the ipad in and out over time

I've considered using the printer to make the mold, then make glass parts out of it. I'd agree that the printers I've seen don't make a strong product (plastic printers).

Then again, if you made up a 3d model and printed it to proof it, you might be able to job it out to someone with a strong enough printer. (stainless steel?)

The one I have access to uses glue and powder and builds it up. It's incredibly accurate as one of the test prints was a hand and it had detailed finger prints. But I don't think it was very sturdy and I don't believe it would even hold up to making more than one fiberglass part out of each print.

Yeah... now that I'm thinking about it, it probably wouldn't be sturdy enough since the plastic used will be a little soft. For my install, I used 1/4" plexiglass and it was strong enough...

My office has two machines (although I don't know how to use either). The first is the PVC one that makes the rough parts. The new machine is the powder style though.

At the very least, both of them would make parts that would hold up enough to make a plaster mold of, then you could mold fiberglass parts from there.

Very nice install! Does the GPS work with the iPad mounted in the dash?

Yes, and I have a Bluetooth GPS receiver for better localization. It works perfectly.
