Pics of an install I finished this week and a question.

The BMW I finished today and the Pontiac was a couple weeks ago. The BMW has a nav interupt for watching videos from a dvd player but I think I am going to try and talk the guy into a PC but the problem is the Nav Tv part interupts the RGB of the navigation and gives you a composit video input (yellow rca). Im not sure how to get the computer to look decent or even if you can with only a composit input? Any ideas? I will have more pics on Wed. night of the whole car and interior.


Yes I know the material in the back is a different color......its actually not......the new stuff is what the panels on the side looked like when the car wa new in 2004. Thats age baby. The customer is gonna have us wrap the panels with new material later. The crosses on the Pontiac is the customers thing also so dont start yelling at me about how silly you think they look. Trust me.......I already know.

Slick installs, I like the keeping of the trunk space :)

You can get decent looking video with composite, but it won't be great. If you have any 7-8" monitors laying around with composite input, see if you can't find a laptop with composite output to test out and see how it looks for yourself. Before I bought a VGA monitor I was using composite, and to be honest it was acceptable to me, but after seeing VGA I could never go back.

Realistically, you're not.
A PC's video resolution output is VGA or better. VGA = 640x480.
As I'm certain you're aware, most small LCD panels for vehicle use are not capable of resolution like this. Depending on the LCD, the PC display through composite video could range from slightly blurry to all-out suck like a Hoover.

Some things you can do to improve the quality and make it less sucky:
PC resolution needs to be as low as possible: 640x480.
Text needs to be enlarged to be more readable.
You can adjust some timings and such with PowerStrip or similar software. It's all trial-and-error based.

Even with some of these measures, some have given up on a composite LCD in disgust.

I used to have similar problems with pc's setup for htpc use and Tv's and projectors that didn't support vga, dvi or hdmi. One of the best things to do is just tweak the video card and see what looks best (of course this was with $200+ video cards not onboard). Something like rivatuner really allows you to up the output resolution and dpi...even the refresh rate on some cards. I wont say it looked as good as a digital signal but for most people it was acceptable and should definitely look pretty good on a 7" screen.

It's going to be hard to read the text on the composite output. It'll have to be ridiculously huge. And when it is, it'll look all pixel-ated and ugly.

Is that a G8-GXP? Man I want one of those....

+1 pontiac finally started getting it right, and then it all went out the window...

great work Cabe! and the crosses don't look horrible on the car, just out of place on the sub box

you work with Street Audio alot? i've been through there a couple of times-- probably one of the better shops in the area
