Shutdown Controller vs. Regulator for EEEPC, which is deal?

I have seen many posts on here about regulators and shutdown controllers. It gets confusing after a while for a newbie. In order to support power to my eeepc in the car do I really need a regulator or will a unit such as this be sufficient: http://store.mp3car.com/M2_ATX_160W_..._p/pwr-015.htm

I read in another post that suggested this unit. I just want to know if this would be sufficient. I also read over the manual posted in the mp3car store. Any suggestions?

The M2ATX is not the best solution for your EEE PC. The M2ATX is designed for a desktop-style motherboard that is ATX-compliant.

It should help shed some light on different power supplies for vehicle use and what types of systems they are best suited for.

You want a regulator that puts out the same DC voltage as the power brick that you use to plug it into the wall at home.
Chances are there is a Carnetix model that will meet your needs quite nicely.

Or get a 12v-120v inverter and plug in the laptop's regular power supply.
Not the most elegant solution, but it's been working well for me for over a year.

Or see if http://epowersupply.us has something. That's what I'm doing next.

Inverters can jack up battery charging systems.
It's not the best idea.

But an inverter is an option. Not the most efficient or elegant option, but an option nonetheless.

Just a question about what you mentioned before I recently got myself a Asus H1000 and was thinking about putting an invertor and just plugging in the regular power supply. Do you care to elaborate about how an invertor can mess up your battery charging system. Thanks for the help in advance.

To put it quite simply:
The inverter's wave pattern is a square wave. batteries like those in laptops and cellphones and digitial cameras do not work well with the square wave that an inverter puts out.
The inverter can damage the laptop battery and/or the battery charging circuit inside the laptop.

This is a much better solution, as the auto adapter is made to accept the unregulated 12v from the car.
You could wire this directly to the battery if you wanted, and many members do just that.

I fried my old car PC and I decided on Asus Eee 1000 as a replacement

I have ordered the original Asus DC adapter for 45$ received it DOA lol, so I ordered another one.

By the way, HD radio is much much much much better with Asus Eee in comparison with my old setup with M3-ATX.
