WOL works only "sometimes". I hard wired my 1000HE by soldering. (Combined two wires, it starts. Combined it again it shutdown) I do see that there is a company that made a loopback device/enclosure. They are selling it for around $100 I think. I am getting rid of my netbook if anyone interested?

Don't do the shoddy trick of splicing and connecting the two Ethernet wires together...that's one quick way towards frying your system, or messing up the network stack in the OS you're running.

Why not get a router supported by DD-WRT, and set it up to send out a Wake-On-Lan ethernet packet (which sends the MAC address 16 times over UDP), and tada! Your computer starts!

Just wire the router into the accessory voltage on your car with a dc-dc converter, so when you fire up the car, the router fires up as well, then fires up your computer. Then on shutdown, you could monitor for when you lose network connection, and when you do, it shuts down.

That's what I may do on mine, or I might use the Seeeduino board I picked up along with an Ethernet shield and program it myself.

I am using just the "cable" not the onboard or any ethernet on the mobo. It will in no way fried/kill/burn my computer.
