    Baja 302 Worklog

I've been threatening to do this for a while, so here goes. I'm working on version 3 of my BoatPC for my 1996 302 Baja.

She's not much for performance, as she tops out around 65 mph (Idaho speed limit is 50), but we use her mostly for partying (bar hoping) on Lake Coeur d' Alene in north Idaho, but I've taken her to Lake Havasu for the Desert Storm Poker Run for the last 3 years , as well as attend most events local events in the Pacific NW including the Lake Chelan Poker Run, Lake Roosevelt Poker Run, Coeur d' Alene Performance Boats Regatta, occasionally hit Seafair, and would love to go to the Portland Poker Run and the Lake Harrison Poker Run (boy do I need a better paying job).

If you are on Facebook, do a search for "Compensator" and become a fan. I try to keep photos updated, but sometimes I lag a bit. My avatar picture on MP3Car was taken going across North Priest Lake (Idaho) at about 60 Mph, the blonde in the passenger seat is a total hottie, but out of my life now.

Ok, so like I said, she's a '96 Baja 302 V twin that originally came with twin 7.4 merc motors (310 HP ea.) with Bravo 1 outdrives. I had pulled the motors one year to get them rebuilt to the 500 HP range, but the coc%$ucking shop I worked with decided they wanted to snort the value (about $9k in parts and cash deposit), so I ended up motorless. Fortunately for me a friend had a pair of Volvo 5.7 Gxi motors (320 HP) in his shop, and gave me a great deal to get back going. Bottom line is the boat is about 2 MPH faster, weighs 400 lbs. less, and I'm out $13k.

So, this year at the Desert Storm Poker Run, they are having a stereo contest for the first time and there will be an award for original install and while my boat is no where near the baller boats that show up for that event, I thought I might have a chance to win with a Boat PC install in the originality category.

Bottom line, I'm going to post my ongoing worklog to get BoatPC version 3 going. Please feel free to comment as you will. Its gonna start slow, but will pick up in March as we start putting gear in the boat. The boat leaves Spokane on April 20th on its way to Lake Havasu.

Here are the services I plan on using:

    Harddrive playlists

On a boat, you must have really good playlists, otherwise you're being a DJ, not fun!
    HD radio
Local radio is nice, especially when Desert Storm gets broadcast on a local station
    XM radio
Must have for remote lakes like Chelan, Harrison, Flathead, Priest, you get the idea.
    Rearview Cam
Good to know if anyone is still in the water 'checking the prop'? also really cool video when planed out.
    Pictures
Always cool to show pics from last weeks outing.
    Video
Gotta have the pron ready in case you get a hottie in the stabbin cabin!
    Google Earth (cached)
Again, a coolness factor, but could be a somewhat helpful navagation aide.
    Fusion Brain
Light sensor, air temp, water temp, control amps (anti thump) and maybe navigation plus other lights (I have some very cool (but really illegal) lights).
    Phone
It might be nice to know if my leash is ringing.
    Audio broadcast
I'd like to output my audio out to a FM transmitter so other boats rafted up can enjoy

    Hardware

    Shuttle SD50XB
New 15.6 barebones Atom 330 based touchscreen from Shuttle, looked at the gateway and HP touchscreens, but they didn't have VGA output.

    Carnetix 2140
Found a 2140 in the classifieds on the forums from rocsell $90 shipped, so I thought WTH, and sent him some $. turns out it had the 5V add on and he also sent the output jumper kit, Holy Score Batman! Thanks Rocco!

    CL-RLC
To hell with the Powermate, cannot get it to work in Win7, so I'm gonna use the JL Audio CL-RLC for volume control, and not use the frontend controls, I may actually use 3, one for cockpit volume, one for cockpit bass, one for cabin volume. There's another reason for this which I will go into later.

    Dash Screen

Bought the Inelmatic when it was on sale. Seems to work as advertised.

    HD radio
I bought a bunch of these when they were on ebay for <$50 (just ask JohnWPB)

    XM radio
Never had much luck with the RS-232 cable for these, might have to buy the USB adapter

    HD TV tuner
Bought this at Fry's should work

    Outdrive Cam
Just a cam mounted in the swim deck, piped into the video in of the HD tuner. need to order this. Will look awesome at speed to see the outdrives.

    GPS module

I have a garmin marine GPS antennae, so I want a module to plug that into, the module I have is RS-232, so I'll need to use a USB-GPS and hope there is a pin that outputs 5v

    Fusion Brain

I have an older version that I bought and never implemented, mount under the dash to make the relay connections to the lights. Gonna have to run 25' of line to the water temp sensor, I plan to mount that in the aft drain plug (at least underwater at slow speeds) with some epoxy. Gotta order a relay pack and maybe the light sensor.

    FM transmitter
Bought one of those 1W units off fleabay from China, at least it was cheap

I keep thinking a front facing CAM would be cool for videos, especially when in a poker run, we'll see how the budget works out.

    Software

Win7 - time to embrace the future, even if I have to no use my Powermate and not use the Carnetix Psumoni, but the tray app someone posted on the Carnetix forum for shut down. (BTW, I think both of those issues have to deal with their software not being the active window, time to update software guys)

    RideRunner Baby!!!

Kudos to the RR guys for getting it Win7 compatible.

    All the plugins I require.

Hoping to use DFX5. (hint to John)

On a side note, I want to thank all of the guys who work on RR and the plugins. You don't get anything near the 'compensation' you deserve for the work you put in.

    Guino, of course.

the Compensator is out of winter storage and in the driveway. I've got a large box of parts and will soon start the install.

My budget has taken a hit since I no longer have a steady job, but our group is still planning on going to Havasu for the Desert Storm Poker Run on April 23.

I'll try to do this right and take pics and do updates as I go.

Spent most of the day wiring up the peripherals in the cubby hole. Ugh, what a job, but trying to do it right. Looks like I'm gonna be one audio input short, don't know how I missed that. Might have to drag out the old Audigy 2 NX, hate to add more power hungry devices tho.

OK, what kinda crap is this, drug out the NX, downloaded the Win7 drivers, and it treats both the mic and line input jacks as one in the same. I don't remember that being the case with the XP drivers. Oh, well. The NX is out. IT would be nice to find another USB sound card that I could get 3 inputs and one output, might have to use the Mitchjs audio selector.

The touchPC I'm using only has 2 inputs and 1 output, but that's still a lot of wires to run through the mounting arm.
