    BU-353 cuts out unexpectedly

Using BU-353 GPS USB reciever plugged directly into Intel D945GLF2 MB, Roadrunner, Xport, iGuidance.

Receiver works great, always has except that hours into a drive it will randomly cut out.
The "GPS" icon in my RR skin will disappear and iGuidance will lose its location. Occasionally the GPS icon in RR comes back, but shortly back off. The GPS info screen in iGuidance shows no coordinates and all the satellites are greyed out instead of being green as they usually are. I typically get 8-9 satellites, no problem.

The puck is located underneath my dash which is plastic. It has a clear view of the sky through my windshield. I do not have any tint on my windshield. This is in a WRX so I can remove the clock in the dash easily to expose the GPS, this eliminates the possiblity of the plastic dash causing interference, unfortunately this does not help. It shouldn't anyway since I have proven the GPS has no problem getting a fix on multiple satellites with it in place.
Restarting the system brings it back to normal.
Note this occurs with a clear view of the sky on an interstate. It's not as if I'm covered by trees or in a canyon. I have experience with GPS units and they typically don't lose signal in these conditions.
Opening xport shows it's still communicating data, although I can't confirm there is anything useful in it.
I suspect a faulty GPS unit (it's only 3 weeks old) or some OS related issue, or possibly xport not forwarding properly.
I can't consistently reproduce the problem.
I am not connected through a GPS hub, it's directly connected to the USB terminal on the back of the motherboard.
This is not a resume from hibernate/standby/startup problem, never had those problems, I am literally losing the GPS randomly hours into using it.
I've searched through the threads, but all I could find were issues with initial setup, I've already cleared those hurdles.

    Any ideas?
Ready to just return the unit.
Any suggestions for a more reliable GPS?

    Thanks.

it might be a faulty unit but they are one of the best, maybe try a reinstall...

weird, i have same mainboard, and had same issues, rebooting fixed it. What i could suggest is updating the chipset drivers and see what happens, i'll try that too when i have time.

That's a little different from the usual problems. I wouldn't expect it to be anything to do with USB, motherboard, drivers or software since the data is still being received. You could post up a portion of a log where it cuts out. That might be interesting to see.

What I would suspect is the GPS chip crashes. Hey, it could have bugs too. SirfDemo has been known to fix things like that, and break things as well. If used properly it can clear up a few issues.

Hmm, is the GPS unit next to any heater vents that might be causing it to overheat?

Same here, same mainboard with same issues. When it happens I just reboot the carpc and then the GPS works fine until the next time it happens which is usually a couple of hours into a long drive.

If it really is the mainboard, it's possible that the USB root hub or chipset is overheating. Xport would be showing "No data", "Unknown data" or "Port closed" at the bottom.

actually, last night the gps stopped working for me, it's receiving commands, but 0% signal on all satellites, no matter how many hours facing direct sky. I heard about the bu-353 loosing it's signal if it's kept out of sky view for a long period, as im parked inside an underground garage and my pc runs 24/7, as the receiver switches to a different protocol to see if it can see something if it fails to find a fix the first few runs... Speculation maybe, all i know is i have to buy a new one, and if i park inside the garage i dont want it to happen again..

It might be cheaper to just hack up a USB cable and put a relay inline. Switch it on with the IGN/ACC.

these sound exactly like the problems i was having for so long... eventually all it took to fix it was putting the gps mouse in a different location in the car. you might not think its getting interference, but it takes very little RF noise to throw these things off....
