    BU-353 lasted about a week

My BU-353 lasted about a week. I think sitting in a somewhat warm car in the sun killed it.

It locked up instantly when I first got it.

After a few days it took several minutes to lock up.

Now it wont lock up at all.

    Time to try something else.

Hmmm I don't know. I had a BU-353 on the roof of my truck for about 3 years here in Vegas. Never garaged and rarely in the shade. It's now been sitting on a ledge outside my window in the direct sunlight for the past 2 years...never out of the elements or the heat, and always worked as expected. I'd bet moisture or just a plain manufacturing defect before I'd suspect heat. Likewise for all my radio and wifi gear. Just about 3 years in the truck without a break...and no failures that I could detect.

Dunno... maybe I got a bad one... I do see a thread here with others complaining about them dying as well. It may have been the heat opening up a crappy solder joint.

I would think they would make them out of white plastic instead of black plastic to start with.

Anyway, I ordered a BR305-PS4, which is also made by USGLOBALSTAT. It appears to be made for permanent outdoor mounting. It is rated for a bit hotter (85 C verses 80 C). The claimed lockup time is quicker.

One thing that I am concerned with is where the heck to mount it. I have a perfect spot, which is also a perfect spot for an outdoor WiFi antenna. I hear they interfere sometimes... I will have to play with that a bit before I drill any permanent holes. Another thing I am not thrilled with is the PS/2 connector, requiring an adapter to go to USB. The PS/2 connector is big, and it is going to be a hassle to run the wire thru where I need to run it.

    Time will tell I guess.

I have bought over 70 bu-353's and s4 models and I find it's like rolling the dice whether you have a good one or a bad one. That's why I settled in on the sure development board and all it's benefits i.e. multiple connection options, exterior antenna with a long cable and low power consumption. Just my 2 cents SNO

I just noticed the thread on the internal battery.

While I only used my BU-353 for a week in the truck, I actually bought it close to 2 years ago.

I wonder if that might be the problem. The symptoms sort of match.

I may mess with it when I get the chance, just to understand what went wrong.
