Is there any need for a sound card since the h701 will be getting an optical signal and doing the processing anyway?

    thanks, barry
You should be able to use the SPDIF out on the mobo. My latest mobo had optical out, but I listened to it for a while and it didn't sound right. The music was lacking, so I went back to using my sound card and the quality picked back up to where it should be again. Generally the built in sound is not too great, but you will have to listen and judge for yourself.

If the h701 is doing the processing, why should the chipset audio matter?

I think your missing the idea of what's going on. The onboard sound chip has to take the sound from the DVD, MP3, whatever and process it, then convert it to the Sony Philips digital interface standard (SPDIF) the H700/1 then takes that signal and converts it back and then does the EQ, x-over, time alignment, etc... and outputs the sound.

So the sound card or built in sound chip on the mobo plays a crucial role in the overall sound quality.

    FAQ: What is Bit-Perfect?

read that and try to achieve it if you can.

The quality of the onboard audio will make all the difference in the world.

Think of it this way....it's just like a CD...if the CD is scratched or if the original recording is crappy, it doesn't matter what comes after it. Same thing here.

MSRP $450. So it should be cheaper than that.

The question is....what do I hook it up to? Is it like the Ht00/701? I am not familiar with all the technical mumbo-jumbo on all of this. WHat would I buy with it to run the setup I want is the question I am going for I guess.

I don't know what you want, I'm just posting neat stuff kind of related to this thread. That above HU is not a CD player, it just hooks to a I-pod and digitally transfers the music so it sounds real good. That's all. It's red, too.
