I used to draw a diagram of the 320 with all the settings after a while too I guess what your talking about makes sense if theres that much time invested in tuning, at least if the processor craps out, swaping it out will be much less of an ordeal...

Well, I no longer have the 9860 to hook it up and no c701 on the way for a little bit. I'll have to see if I can get my buddy to come over with it so I can hook it up ai-net and see what goes on.

I have just the brain and controller, no HU. Whenever power is lost it defualts the volume to zero and does not choose a preset so I have to raise the volume up, click on a preset and also adjust the display type (off for me ). I've never had to use the reset button. Is that mainly for HU use to reset the buss?

I never used it stand alone, so maybe it's more head unit than processor,I've had times that after a battery disconnect it might not see one of my changers, or I even had one time that it just sounded screwed up, but a reset & all was good

I know alpine always recommends it

Question...what is the best head unit to pair with the PXA-H701? Is it the IVA-D901? How about the iDA-X001?

Also, does the PXA-H701 have DSP Virtual sound field effects such as Concert Hall? This is VERY important to me.

So are you NOT running a PC?

I'm not too familiar with the modern HU's, but I would say the H701 works better with a digital source than analog. So get a HU that has an optical SPDIF output. Using an Alpine HU will give you an added advantage of not needing to buy the $200 controller as you can control it through the HU.

As far as sound effects on the H701, I don't think it has them. I haven't really looked, but I don't remember seeing any such thing in the manual. If that kind of thing is important to you, you will want to make sure the HU has that feature.

Hi guys. OK I've been reading this thread and have learned a great deal. Thanks for all the informative comments.

I was thinking about getting a CarPC and hooking it up straight to my amps, but after reading the thread it appears adding the Alpine PXA-H701/RUX-C701 Combo is absolutely ESSENTIAL for exceptional sound quality. I got pretty much everything I need to know regarding how to connect the PC to the H701. I require no head unit so the RUX-C701 will suit me just fine. Gonna get a sound card but not sure which one, or even whether I should go PCI or USB. But since I'm going digital out from the soundcard, I'm sure PCI will do just fine, right? No worry about noise, etc using digital right?

This is going to increase the budget significantly so I hope the addition of the alpine combo between PC and amp is worth it. For the record, I have an 8 speaker Bose system in my Mercedes so I'm gonna need to buy well, 8 replacement speakers naturally.

There are things that concern me however. Hopefully you can address some of these:

    1)Space:

I have fairly decent size trunk my Merc E-430. But it seems all these components are gonna take up a ****load of space. I mean we're talking:

    A)Sub
B)Amp(one amp or two? I don't even know)
    C)CarPC(supposedly not that big)
    D)PXA-H701
E)God only knows what the hell else

Quick pic of a typical E-class trunk:

I'm wondering if I should even add a sub at this point. I'm sure not having a sub back there will free up a ton of space. Besides...if I get fairly good speakers with good tight bass, wouldn't that be enough for rock and trance music? Don't really get into HipHop anymore.

How are guys fitting these components in your ride? Do you still have some room to store stuff? If I put my PC in the trunk, where/what do you suggest I mount it to? Ditto with the H701? Ditto with the amp(s)?

    2)The other concern....cabling:

A Mercedes Benz has an extremely clean and well done interior that absolutely screams "DON'T **** WITH ME!". There are practially no seams between the rug and plastic material. Everything is molded tightly and extremely snug. So... how the heck will the installer run the thick DIN cable from the H701 to the controller, as well as the potentially thick VGA cable from the PC to the monitor in the dash? Surely holes will have to be drilled, no?

Just how thick is that DIN cable anyway? Is it like "water-hose" thick? Or more like a RF coaxel cable? I was thinking maybe keep the controller in the trunk and just set it once and leave it alone, but I have a feeling I'm gonna want to screw around with the H701 brain while driving, messing with the volume, time alignment and whatnot.

    3)H701>direct speaker connection:

Can the H701 act like an amp, driving the speakers directly? Or do we absolutely need a seperate amp to do this? Why couldn't Alpine have given the H701 speaker connectors and simply call it a day? I don't understand. Adding what might amount to two amps will take up a grip of room.

    4)Touchscreen/no touchscreen:

I do not want a touchscreen. I got large hands/fingers and I just don't feel the need to drag my fingers across a monitor to navigate my menus. A mouse is much more intuitive for me. Therefore, with my PC in the trunk, would it be a problem just running a simple VGA or DVI cable to a standard non-touchscreen LCD monitor mounted in the dash? I just need a video signal and nothing else, right? And for control, could I just use a bluetooth mouse?

    Thanks in advance

Your in the wrong thread for all those questions. This one is only centered around the H701.

The mp3car site isn't focused so much on sound systems. You might have better luck at some stereo forums to first figure out the sound system. The H701 is mostly used with analog HU's, so they can help you get all these basics figured out. The PC part of it is where you'd come here to get help.

Thanks for the reply Jason. I've enjoyed reading your posts here at the forums. You've got good knowledge about these things. If there is anything in my many questions above(sorry) you can help me with I'd appreciate it

Let me ask you this though... assuming I decide not to go with a PC, and get the Alpine iDA-X001 HU instead, can that particular unit control the H701 in the same fashion the RUX-C701 can?
