OK.
The IVA-W205 is the only thing close that I'd think of getting, but it's about $800. It also has a bunch of stuff I don't need like the 6.5" screen.
I can get a nice JVC DVD HU for half the price with an SPDIF output, but the volume control of the H701 becomes an issue. I guess if Alpine doesn't make any other way to control it I could probably use a Widget or something and have a small rubber wheel pressed up against the Alpine knob to make it "motorized".
If anyone hears of a device or accessory to control the H701 volume, let me know.
Thanks.

When playing an MP3 CD or DVD it will show the information contained in the MP3 tag, the time remaining and bitrate info. For other sources, I THINK it just shows the source name selected. It's been a while since I've connected my monitor to it. If no one else replys with more info, I'll take my monitor out to my truck and connect it back to see what the other sources shows.
That sounds pretty good. What I can't stand is having the song info scroll along the radio face. I want all the info shown at once so I don't have to sit there and look back and forth at it and the road waiting for the info I want to scroll by. If the video out serves as a secondary display then that would be cool. I could probably mount a little 4" screen some place convenient.

Just an update. While I was serching through Alpine's products I found that Crutchfied says the Alpine IDA-X001,
which is the MP3 player without the CD drive, CAN control the H701. This would make it the least expensive H701 controlling headunit they make.

EDIT, I kept going and Cruthfield also shows that the next 2 lower models, the CDA-9885 and CDA-9883, also can control the H701. Does this sound right to you guys? Maybe Cruthfield is mistaken? Alpine does show these models ascapable.

Can anyone elaborate on this? Do the Alpine HU's run the H701 more slowly than the RUX controller? Is it just with the 9861? Turbo, does your touchscreen unit run the H701 more slowly than the RUX?
I was thinking If I got the IDA-X001, I could sell my red/green controller to help pay for a nice new I-pod. I can't think of too many times you would access the controller once it's setup. Maybe just switching between the 6 main presets.

I think I know what you mean now. Because most HU's don't have a big LCD screen, they can only show a small portion of the RUX's screen at a time, so this must make it difficult to adjust things such as the EQ and x-over. Maybe the IDA-X001 is better in this regard. Anyway, as long as it controls the main volume and presets I'll be good.

I use a multimedia headunit, so I get menu's & lists, the eq adjustment on the screen is not like on the aux display, the aux display shows like a normal eq, all the bands & you raise them up & down graphic eq style, but on the head unit screen it shows like a list view of the freq, then the value + or - db, it displays several but you do have to scroll up & down to access all 31 bands
I don't use the rux much when I tweek, it is just easier on the d300 touchscreen, the rux just sits there looking good. the main thing I use the rux for is the presets, I don't even think I know how to get to them through menu's, well I do, but you have to think about it to much, the 1-6 presets are right there with buttons, so that's really the only functional thing that's missed to me... I don't know how this control works with other head units though
the comparison of using the rux display vs. the multimedia display is like the difference between texting on a phone vs. emailing on a laptop, it's easier on the bigger touchscreen for sure.
also, let me know about the rux if you sell it, I switched out for the blue one to match my head, my thinking there was I was going to change all of my interior illumination to blue.... yeh right, I'm never going to have time to do that, whole dash, all my switches & steering wheel buttons & everything, it'd be much easier to just use an orange matching rux & then just change the d300 over to orange w/smd's... theres only a few as the display is only half din., if you don't want to sell it, if anyone has an orange that they want to trade for a newer blue display lmk
I haven't noticed any lag or anoyances when using my touchscreen at all, btw![]()

OK, so using a regular HU just shows the EQ band and then a + or - then the number. That kind of sucks. I like the graphical look of all the bands so I can see the overall curve. It looks like I will need to keep the RUX controller and have it somewhere fairly near, maybe the center console. I might stick it in the dash, but I'm not sure yet.
Hey Turbo, I'll swap controllers with you. My Pontiac is all red/orange as well, but I think the blue lights of my old Clarion CD player look cool in contrast. The IDA-X001 is also a cool blue color. Let me figure out what HU I'm going to get and then I'll let you know.
I think the speed lag Bigbull mentioned is just due to the slow nature of the non-graphical screens.

I just checked out that ida unit, haven't seen any of the new stuff, looks pretty cool, but it does no eq control at all except access the presets. otherwise it looks like a real nice piece
if you want to swap I think we'd need to swap guts only cause I painted my face trim to match the head, they were a little off from each other so now there both a satin black, you've taken yours apart before haven't you? I can swap the guts too for you if need be, but then I'd have to get yours, swap it, then ship it back where if you gut it we could cross ship on a monday & have less downtime, I guess you should decide on a head first though, lmk![]()
