i'm not aware of anyone who has hacked the rux to use with a pc.

without the controller, you can't change anything.

now I believe you can set everything with the ruc then unplug it. so perhaps put the brain somewhere where you can access the ruc port easily?
Have you tried that Red? cause i think im going to win my ebay bid for the H701/RUX combo...and i would much rather have it so i dont have to mount the RUX...

I have not tried it because I don't need or want that functionality. however, I believe someone else one here tried it at some time and reported back that it worked.

I can confirm that. When I first intalled mine, I attempted to unplug the controller from the unit just to see and it still functioned normally retaining the remote turn on activation and current settings. And the volume controlls on the PC still function to alter the volume (provided all drivers are correct and up to date). But I opted to mount mine for on the fly adjustments.

anyways, just because im curious, why would you not want that function? is there some sort of downside to it?

Ah, i see. I was hoping to save some money and not have to buy the controller, but i guess there's no way around it.

    Thanks

Yeah, when they first came out they were only sold as a unit, not seperately. It was only after Alpine introduced HU's that could control it did they start selling the brain and controller seperately.

Now that I've got a Alpine MM HU I was thinking I might sell my controller, but it's still worth having. It's a lot of button pushes to change presets and Alpine wants the car stopped before you change it, which I think is overkill as far as safety is concerned.

    Keep the controller.

If you're going to tune with an RTA it's nice to have it outside with you (but still plugged in) so you can make changes while RTAing on the fly.

We're actually considering buying a spare one just for this reason.

Yeah, I plan to keep it. I might swap someone for a blue light unit, though.

Anyway, if I tune with an RTA (been a while) I always sit in the drivers seat. I figure that's how I'm going to be listening to it anyway.

Has anyone actually used the 5.1 processing on the H700/1's? It's just sitting there begging to be used. I may drop in an identical center channel mid so all 3 up front match then take one of my extra 2 channel amps and use one channel to power the center and the other channel to power 2 stock rear speakers for mono rear surround. I don't think the rear surround has to be stereo, or does it?

It's got all these "phantom bass" and "image size" or whatever settings for the 5.1. It kind of has me interested.

hey jason, I never mentioned the lockout safety restrictions cause I installed my head with a pac tr-7 from day one, so I don't even know/ never realized all the restrictions on these units for alpines you should always include the tr7 with the install automatically, been that way from the first mm units really except for the very first iva d1000 think it was, that one only needed to ground one wire, no sequence, but ALL others NEED the tr-7.

the one thing that annoys me is the navigation, you always have to press the OK button for the bs safety disclaimer, always ment to do something to automate that but never got around to doing anything with that, are you installing the nav too? the newest voice nav is sweeeeet the earlier one I have, when you try to enter an address while driving it'll give a pop up saying not to use it while driving, but if you press ok it'll then let you do it anyway, I wonder if this has changed with the new nav?

BTW, if anyone wants to sell an orange display I'm interested, either outright or maybe even trade for a blue display? pm me
