    Red,
has anyone determined a certain function that causes the noise? crossover, eq etc? i thought i had read through all of the H701 posts but it looks like i missed some. If its related to crossover function or eq ... i have not started the process of tuning yet ... i am using the crossover function of my alpine MRV-F545 ... but i plan on running the H701 crossover function when i purchase a mrd-m1005 for my polk subs.

I'm using all functions (EQ/XO/Time Alignment/Phase adjustment) on my alpine so I'm not sure which part of it is causing the noise.

I've done the following to determine that it's the alpine and not anything else in the system.

Plugged in a different CD player (actually a progressive scan DVD player that plugged into the wall) into the Alpine, had noise...so it's not the computer.

Plugged in a set of head phones (Sennheiser 550s) to the computer with and without my head phone preamp, no noise...again, it's not the computer.

Tried different RCAs, run direct from the Alpine to the amps, still have noise...so it's not the RCAs.

We've tried plugging the DVD player straight to the amps as a full range signal to the mid-ranges, no noise, so it's not the amps.

The noise is coming primarially through the mid-range speakers...naturally...

You would probably have to reach for the knob and turn it to select which source the H701 would see.
Thanks Jason! A manual switch would certainly be a good workaround.

On my system, the optical input does not always get priority. When the head unit is set to "Tuner" or "iPod", the processor will always use analog, regardless of whether or not there is an active optical device. I have to switch it to "DVD" to listen to the optical source (Computer, DVD, PlayStation2, etc).

I have a feeling that optical inputs only get priority when there is no Alpine head unit or controller connected.

Did you mean "but I have NOT seen an input select option"? I would be curious to know if there is any unit other than the RUX which can do this. I have read most of the manuals for the other head units which can control the H701, and none of them give instructions for switching inputs.

    Thanks again.

wow ... about all i can say .... tough one to find... your setup is a top notch install with quality components.
has anyone dissected a H701 to see what components are inside? maybe connectivity to re-flash the software etc? replace op-amps etc..

    thinking out loud...

I had some noise by accident once when I had one amp's RCA's connected to my soundcard analog out, and the other amp connected to the alpine analog outs. I was switching over to my soundcard for tunning and ran inoth this really obnoxious buzzing/whining. The second all RCA were either connected to the alpine OR the soundcard it all went away. Are you running analog out of your soundcard into your H701 Jan?

Is the H701's chassis grounding anywhere? Is it close to your fuel pump? or are any cables close to your fuel pump?

That sucks you have noise, I only heard issues with the analog in regarding noise. I was talking to another person this past weekend and they had a little background noise once because the PCM signal was set too high when using digital in.

Optical out of either onboard optical (tos-link) or the Chaintech optical or the x-meredian optical. All 3 ways give me a bit of noise.

Nope - all signal cables are run over the spare tire well, no fuel pump near them. The 701 is close to the computer, but unfortunately I don't really have an option on that at the moment...I might here in a few weeks...depends on how quickly I can get some things done before finals.

I've messed with the PCM levels on the Alpine then restructured gains accordingly. It eliminated a bit of the noise, but not all of it.

Yes, I left out the most important word, NOT. Turbo has both a Alpine MM HU and the PC and can switch between them. I really don't know how he has it wired up as he's known for some complicated designs. It's possible he just switches the HU to DVD mode so that the H701 looks for a optical signal and then he can select which optical signal he wants to listen to such as the PC. This is my guess. It's a bit reduntant, but that's good. If the PC goes out, he still has music to listen to.

Excellent, I was looking for some info like this. Now I need to read it.

Jan, maybe you could pull the H701 out and away (1-2 feet) from the PC just temporarily to see if it's picking up some stray magnetic fields from a nearby component. The noise is probably a compromise in design by Alpine or who ever made the H701 for them as it's not their top of the line product. They had to make it at a certain price point, you know. Now if Alpine came out with a limited edition H701XA (or whatever) with upgraded internals to improve SQ and reduce noise for say 3-4 hundred more than the regular H701. That would be a nice unit for competition use. They probably wouldn't sell more than 50-100 of them in my estimation, but it would be cool nontheless.

    @JasonWW:

Back in post #61 you posted some pics of the C701's PCB. I see you've changed the colors between green and orange. Could you explain how? I tried this on my C701 without luck... Only a few led's under the rotary encoder change when i press the knob in/out. The rest stay's green, allthough i see the orange leds are present on the PCB, i can't make them light up.

Oh, by the way, the rotary encoder is a standard thing. I think that you can wire any mechanical (as opposed to optical) rotary encoder in parallel with the one on the PCB. Just in case you were stiil fighting with this question since 2006

Changing the colors is easy. If I remember right, you hold down the Display button on the far right.

Since then I got frustrated with the PC so I pulled it out and went with a 2DIN touchscreen Alpine unit. It interfaces with the 701 seemlessly. It's volume controls take over and the volume knob on the controller doesn't alter the volume anymore.
