Thread: Rough tune on your EQ

This is what the graphic EQ looks like. It's like bars, but with the bottom of the bar removed so you only see the top of each bar. Left side is 20Hz (low bass) right side is 20KHz (high treble). You choose each freq and then raise or lower it. When you boost a certain freq. the bar will move above the center line and when you reduce a certain freq the bar will drop below the center line. You really need to read the manual. Remember that once your done you need to save the EQ curve to one of the 6 presets. Also start out adjusting both left and right the same. I think you hold down a button to make the EQ stereo (no seperate left-right). This makes things go much faster and is less complicated.

Jason I meant to get back to you last night after checking it out again. I checked it out and you're absolutely right....is it IS a standard graphical bar EQ. I just didn't recognize it because like you said, only the top of each bar is shown, and having them not visible threw me off big time!

Damn, I just realized that there are 31 bands for EACH seperate channel!!!!! Good GOD that is a lot of frequency adjustment for only one channel. The 701 really is a monster, but a big fluffy lovable one

Dude...that is EXACTLY what I wanted to know. So you're saying I can avoid having to tune each left and right front channel seperately, if I just hold down a button? What about all five channels at once? Is that possible? If not, how about the front two simultaneously as WELL as the rear two simultaneously? Damn that would rock.

As you can probably tell, I hate reading manuals...they put me to sleep But I'll definitely read this one.

You don't want to tune all 5 channels at once, that doesn't make any sense.

I told you that tuning on the Alpine was the way to go, not tuning via the crappy built in software for your sound card....

I pulled my whole system out of my car since it's going to be in the shop for a week or two so I can't remember what button you press. When you hit the G. EQ button it automatically shows each channel seperately. I think you hold down the "channel" button, the one you use to switch to the next channel, for about 2 seconds and it switches to stereo mode. Channels 1+2 get adjusted at the same time, same for 3+4, 5+6 and then the sub and center stay seperate unless you have the center set to subwoofer duty.

You have 7 - 31 band EQ's and a 10? band for the sub so it's a lot of flexibility.

171 bands total.

just one of the reasons the 701 is such a powerful tool, ESPECIALLY for the money.

about to start plotting the frequecy response curve with the method mentioned above using the radioshask digital spl.

since i am using a computer (winamp) to play my audio directly via a DAC (digital to analog converter i have only the option of chaning my equalizer in winamp.

do any of you know a good equalizer for winamp? the one that it comes with seems very limited. also how would i use a parametric euqalizer since i am sure there is a plugin for winamp out there...

Well, there is true parametric and quasi-parametric. With a true one you basically choose a center frequency (say one that is peaky) and then adjust the Q which is how wide of a bandwidth you want to effect and then you choose the level of boost or cut. A narrow or low Q would effect a very narrow range of freqs and look pointy while a wide or high Q would effect a wider range of freqs and look like a short pyramid. They are quite a bit more complicated to use so you don't see many people using them. Proper calibration can be quite detailed and I don't have much experience tuning with them so you would probably have to look online for that information.

BTW, the quasi-parametric does not goive you Q control, just the center freq and the level control.

At what level do u guys test your system? i tested mine around 90% but somehow i have the feeling that it was way to much power for the test.

set up: 2x 12" Alpine R type
2 x R Type 2 components speakers
2 x Pioneer (something something)

3way crossover in the door + cutoff frequency on the amps.

if u should put those in and try again to get better response for the high frequencies....
