Ground loop trouble or not?
Will, I read your thread on ground loop and found it very informative. I used your recommendations on how to detect and isolate the problem in my config. Thank you!
I just installed a xm receiver in my auto by utilizing the factory options. I ran the antenna specific to Delphi's directions, connected the 12v power cord to a dedicated 12v cigarette outlet (car has two), and connected a 1/8" mini-plug from the line out on the receiver directly to the AUX input in the car. It was quite the easy install.
Later after driving around a bit, I noticed alternator whine coming through the speakers. I isolated the problem down to the 12v outlet and contacted Delphi for a solution. They said this is common and that I needed a ground loop isolator. When I finally got down to thinking I wondered how to modify a ground loop isolator with rca connectors to what I need. Ridiculous!
Maybe my only option is to rewire the 12v outlet (which may or may not disturb the vehicle's electrical system) or even run a third 12v outlet into my car. But before I do this, I would like to know if there are any products out there that may alleviate this problem without all the fuss.
