Nice to see there's still a few options out there.
However, one should note that both of those listings indicate "refurbished".

Both don't list the remote control equipment for them either. Normally, all 3 come with IR remote control accessories and all 3 have an IR plug in receptical.

Strange how the dimensions and layout are eerily similar.

None of these even exist any more, what's the deal? I want an amp with optical input, too!

Perhaps you may be able to find a good used one around.
    Good luck.

I know you can still get the Alpine MRA-F350 but it is only the 5 channels minus the .1 and requires a head unit that can tweak it.

I'm amazed that this thread was started in 2006 and to this day hasn't garnered satisfying solutions (IMHO). By no means am I faulting those of you who've participated in this thread, in fact I have learned a number of things from reading through these pages. One thing I've learned here is that there seems to have been more options for 5.1 amps with optical inputs when this thread started than there are now. Why? Is it the supply or the demand?

With the surge in automotive video integration and myriad technological advancements since '06, shouldn't there be a growing demand for mobile surround sound options? That's not to say there aren't other options available for achieving the goal. However, the techno-trend is usually to move towards smaller, integrated, and digital solutions; the product we're looking for exemplifies all three (IMHO). So as for the demand for this product, what's missing? Is there a more efficient/valuable/whatever solution that obsoletes this option? If so, props to all of you for maintaining the focus of this thread, ha!

If we assume there is enough of a demand, what's stopping the suppliers? Would a 5.1 Ch, optical-in type amplifier pose any design/production/safety/quality/integration challenges that any other amp wouldn't? Some of that has been touched on in this thread. For example, volume control. I personally don't have enough background to say what else could be a factor. Yet the fact remains, we've seen multiple examples of this type of amp being mass produced in the past! So my gut tells me there's no reason a quality audio mfg. couldn't make one. So why wouldn't they want to? Is this amp type not profitable enough? It'd be the only one on the market, charge whatever you want for it!! I'm kidding, don't do that.

Here's a challenge: Tell us what is missing. Why have we seen these amps in the past (albeit few and far between) and why have they gone away? Also, why have very few name brand audio groups produced this type of amp?

My hope is the very next post will have a link in it that says: read this you stupid noob, which will clarify all my mobile surround sound woes that keep me tossing and turning at night. If you don't have an answer, I'd certainly appreciate your opinion.

^^^ Kudos to you for persevering through all of the pages in this thread.
It's nice to see there is still genuine interest in a surround sound amp.
When I was more active here a few years ago, there were some nice new units being developed/made in EU. However, I'm not sure that they ever made it stateside or their cost may have been quite prohibitive.
In either case, may I suggest you register on DIYMA.com as there is always some great classified ads featuring some great lder/classic amps that may fill your needs. If the used items aren't directly listed there, then there's usually an ebay link to those classic amps.
I'm sure you have already noticed the related ("Similar Threads") thread links to this subject listed at the bottom of each page.

You have posed some very interesting questions and the only thing that comes to my mind for an easy answer would be that most audiophile purists don't look to the 5.1 or 7.1 option when creating their sound system. IMO, they feel that there's better SQ to be had with a 2.1 type of system.
