I had moved this stuff to the wiki so everyone could edit/add to the list since there is only so much info allowed in each post. However, the wiki is undergoing some transformation and I don't know if it will be translated to the new wiki.
USB soundcards by nature use a good amount of CPU usage. USB DACs do not however because they are very simple. Perhaps that would work if you do not need line input.
