    do you NEED an amp?

I would like to run audio through my stock E46 (with Harman kardon) speaker/sound system. This is seeming to be the tricky bit at the mo...

My budget doesnt really allow for any extra audio equiptment (other than connector leads etc), but quite a few use an amp in their install (along with SVEN-4).

Can i cut out the necessity of an amp?

Can you cut out the neccessity of a brain?

    Nope.

Even a HU has an amp. Teeny tiny, but it is an amp. And you can get a refurb off egay for $30-$40 shipped. Same quality as a crappy HU's built in.

Are you sure? I once saw a documentary about someone that lost an arm... Got a bionic, and it was controlled by a special designed chip.....

it may be possible if your stock setup has external amps or you keep the stock head unit and go aux in. you can find 4 chan amps on ebay for under $100 so you may need to save up a little longer but it's not out of reach.

I have no idea what an E46 is, but usually Harmon/Kardon systems are amped. You'd best check a forum specifically for your car to see if there's anyway to bypass the headunit and use the amp directly.

Yep BMW. If your radio has a CD changer option, you might be able to use a car2pc adapter to get aux in and computer control from your HU. Or there are other adapters if you aren't connecting a computer.
