Buying the cheapest amplifier will likely get you an unreliable amplifier that is difficult to use and might not have the needed features. The only factor that this test indicates you can ignore is sound quality below clipping.

If you have a choice between a well built reliable low cost amp, and an expensive amplifier that isn't reliable but has a better reputation for sound quality, it can be inferred from this test that you would get more sound for your money by choosing the former"
pretty much what my conclusions is, and I'm NOT saying all amps are the same. However, I would choose a good reliable budget amp over an expensive reliable name brand, unless that name brand offers me something I can't get anywhere else... like the pdx for example, but not the JL.

Oh, but the JL does in fact offer unique qualities hard to find elsewhere - a butterworth/linkwitz slope adjustment, a 10 x range selection and a detented potentiometer combine to allow the crossover more accuracy than almost any other amp available. Now, does this mean game, set, match - Slash Series? Hell no. Crossover accuracy is not exactly the pinnacle of amp qualities...but it IS right there on the short list. For a true audiophile, an A/B amp (lives up to the AB rep of Freq range), stable and REGULATED at any impedence with a near precise crossover will provide out of this world SQ. And at double its rated power, no less. A crossover network like this allows you to defeat the headunit settings - something I completely agree with Focal about - and use purely your amps setting. Flattest response, cleanest response, raw efficient sound. JL designed these amps to say - Bench test?? We dont' need no stinking bench test. They dont' bench test all that well. However, everything changes when speakers are connected. The tests are completely different (maybe some people have never realized this?). Would I take a Mac over it? YES SIR. But the point is, its not just a cookie-cutter unit with flashy name. Its a damn good amp with unique qualities.

I don't recall you mentioning the BOS since you jumped class? I remember you being a little unsure of how it would be at first.... Thats pretty damn fabulous. Even if its a smaller show. Congrats. Feel better in the new class?

Spring Break Jam - we beat out the 2004 and 2005 world champion in the class (Alex Mendoza). Needless to say, we were REALLY happy with that.

2 weeks later, we drove to Daytona and took third in Street Pro and 6th in ISQC at Spring Break Nationals. Because we went through Judges training the day before the show, we didn't have time to retune. The car changed and the 3"s finally broke in on the 20 hour drive down there...ah well. To move up from 5th to 3rd and move up 2 classes in IASCA and it only being our 2nd show with IASCA, we were pretty damn happy with that too.

redgtivr6 congrats, and i didnt mean to sound demeaning before.

Agreed for the most part, for Jls class (mid range) I say it’s a good amp, but for the price one can buy better, even in modern consumer market, to ME the PG titanium is that amp, that amp is the panicle of perfection, for the price, there new stuff isn’t good for anything but a paperweight, but yeah, ill agree the JL is a good amp, but as for unique, a lot of amps do what it does, but better (PG titanium) I have done some nice jl installs. I did a g35 last year, using all JL it was a damn clean system, but could it be improved? Yes, the amps would have improved it, and they did to me anyways, the guy didn’t notice much of a difference, so we ended up putting the JL back in, (cosmetic reasons) and he only played mp3 cds, so I wasn’t going to argue lol.

This thread is a 'rolla costa'.
Focal, anyone; familiar with GM's Monsoon audio system? My 99 Buick Regal GS has it and sounds great, till the stock subs went bad. So I'm looking to upgrade. I'm sold on the the Kenwood Dnx 8120 head unit. I want to go with JL Audio's slash series amps 300/4 and 500/1. ZR525CSI speakers. and I have 2 'Pops' 12 subs.

I mentioned my monsoon because I am very happy with it. The fullness in music it presents, is awesome (Yanni comes alive in my ride). I want to recreate the same fullness monsoon offers - with a new aftermarket rig. On a budget of $1400 for amps and speakers. What would you suggest for that $ amount to make Monsoon a distant memory?

Also, a shop demo'd his truck for me. I liked that the subs where punching - hard - but, it didn't have the fullness I wanted. We have our own tastes in sound, but using the Monsoon as a frame of reference. This same shop also suggested going from JL to Alpine amps. I just need help matching up the components for my budget, leaving out the should coulda woulda song and being pleased.
    - suggest away - thanks!
