If everything is going off-axis in the doors then alot of car audio specific drivers are designed for that, although there are some good combos of raw drivers that work good too. Pre-built kick panels are so-so. I mentioned in another thread that kick panels need a lot of work to get the full potential out of them. A set of pre-builts will get you in the area of good staging, but could lack midbass output.

Going with a factory door mount 2-way, you are really going to have to focus on a tweeter that can play fairly low (if the woofer is mounted off-axis) and work great off-axis if they are mounted as such.

If you have room in your sails for a large format tweet (~4" diameter) you will have some good options. Hiquphon OW, Peerless HDS, Scanspeak 6600 are some really great tweeters.

Even if you do pick up a set of car components, you might still want to consider the active crossover route vs passive. Even though passive crossovers are designed for the speaker set, they are not designed with every car in mind. And as scott mentioned, Install is about 90% of how well something is implemented and how it will sound.

Don't forget to leave room in your budget for dampening materials if accurate sound is your goal.

I'll leave you with two VERY addicting sites if you want to investigate the DIY realm or pre-packaged systems. There is nothing wrong with pre-packaged, I just prefer experimenting myself.

Ah ok. I thought you would be into something like that. Nothing wrong with simple.

A couple other component sets to look at...

    Alpine F1 SPX-Z15
    Genesis Absolute 2.2

Both of those use car variant scanspeaks Too bad you probably won't be able to audition them since not too many places carry the highend stuff.

EDIT: Doh I was thinking the K2 were the utopias for some reason. That stuff I linked is probably out of your budget.

DLS has some nice sets. So does Rainbow. You will get similar performance to the focal stuff, but it's going to be dependant on tastes. I haven't heard any of these personally so I can't really rank them for you. I am only providing options.

Have a look at the CDT ES-07 comps. 7" woofers that make amazing bass and have very good response in the upper frequancy. Plus, they can take alot of power. And if you plan to stay passive, CDT are know to have some very well calibrated xover.

I heard the Morels midgrade line or one step down from the high end stuff has a better european sound whereas the high end line is tailored for the US bright tweeter market.

Alpine has it's high end stuff. Nothign funny about it. Like I said, the F1 speakers are made by scanspeak and the component set has a MSRP of $1800

Those are decent too. Those midbass drivers and I think tweeters are made by Vifa.
