    ANY full-duplex USB soundcard's that are bus-powered?

    Hi all,

I'm so tired of my SB Audigy 2 NX. At first it was the only soundcard that fully met my needs, but now I'm thinking there HAS to be something else out there.

I've read durwood's very awesome "Ultimate USB, Firewire, External Soundcard List" thread and looked at almost every card on there, but none of them have everything I need.

I need a full-duplex card that is bus-powered, with an Optical input. Right now, I have an XMPCR with the optical mod output, and that's the only reason I even have the NX... because it can play the signal coming in to the optical input without any additional software being run, or having to set it to "monitor" the input signal.

But the NX requires 5v and 1.5amps of power, and has issues with hibernation (Devcon does not address the issues). I need to get some of that power back for other periphs, and I want something that doesn't have issues with hibernation.

If something like this exists, I'd be SO grateful if someone could point me in the direction... (it has to be USB, my pc does not have a powered firewire port).

    Thanks!

PS - I have an open ExpressCard54 slot too, but I know of nothing that exists for that yet other than the "SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook" which I already purchased and tried. It does full duplex fine with all analog, but if you try and input S/PDIF, it becomes horribly choppy and indeciperhable. So that card has been officially axed.

One more thing... it doesn't even need to have surround output. 2 channel stereo is just fine for my setup.

This is the only one I can see that is bus powered and has digital input.

I can't say how it works, but you might have to monitor the input to get it work. I don't know. If you weren't limited to external cards there would be plenty of options.

Durwood... thanks for the link. You know, I saw that one before and knew it fit my needs, but I could not find it to purchase in the states ANYWHERE. I soon thereafter kind of forgot about it and settled with the NX.

That waveidea one really would be exactly what I need though.

And yeah, it's a bummer that I'm stuck now with only being external. If I knew then what I know now, I totally would have gone the full route to be able to support PCI cards. But it's too late now because of all the $$$ I've put into this pc. I need to work with what I have at this point.

Ok, I'm going to try and hunt down one of these waveidea cards...

    Thanks again durwood.

Ah yes, I remember now. Not only is the WaveIdea not available in the US, it's completely discontinued and no longer sold by WaveIdea. If anyone knows of anywhere in the world I might be able to get one of these, please let me know. Otherwise, back to drawing board.

Hey there from Lafayette! Good to see some more local people on here...

Have you looked at the Edirol USB interface?

    Edirol UA-1EX

It looks to be Full Duplex, and has Optical in..

And it is reasonable priced, $80 on eBay

Hey Felix, yep you're the first Louisian-ian I've seen here. Howdy!

I have in fact already owned and returned the the Edirol UA-1EX. I thought I had it nailed with that one, but unfortunately it didn't work. You can't monitor the DIGITAL input on the ANALOG output with that card. You can monitor the digital input on the digital output, OR you can monitor the analong input on the analog output, but you can't cross the digital input to the analog output. (If I would have downloaded the manual from their website ahead of time and read it, I would have seen that, and not had to buy it and then return it).

I have literally not seen one other card besides the Audigy NX that can do this. SO strange.

Yes, There a few LA people on DIYMA, but kind of a rarity..

It seems it is all in the software driver as to if you can play your XM through the card..

What about the M-Audio Transit?? I have one here, but no way to really test if it will work like you want..

Maybe it would be easier to convert the optical SPDIF to analogue and then into a soundcard?? There are some good and cheap D/A converters around..

Does the Transit have optical Ins?

Converting the SPDIF signal to analog before getting to the soundcard is an option I'm willing to try. Any suggestions on the cheap D/A converters you speak of?

Yep, the Transit definately has Optical input, and one stereo output via 1/8" jack..

The optical in uses the same 1/8" jack as analogue input, has a little adapter from toslink to a clear 1/8" plug..

Hmm, as for the DACs, i have seen some used Coustics and Soundstreams around for sale +/-$100..
