I would get rid of the stereo and put a pc in that car, There is a hardware solution that would let you turn off your amps you would be all set.

Alright, tried to post this earlier, but I'll try it again.
I recently bought a 1999 Grand Prix SE...it's an upgrade (Sad eh?). Well, I bought it used, obviously and it turns out the CD player is messed up (weird E-20 error) Anyways, I want to put a stereo, two 10 inch subs and an amp into the car. Currently I have this stereo in my possession:

Here's my question: If I install a new stereo is there a way I can hook it up/still use my controls on the steering wheel, or is that a lost cause?
Also, if I can't do that with that stereo, but it is possible with others, maybe someone can recommend me a new stereo/dvd player for no more than $350?
Also, a friend has a switch that turns off and on his subwoofers, is this a good idea? Is it easy to do or should I just forget about this idea?
I know I'm asking a lot, but any help would be appreciated.

Hmm...I do have a MacBook, and I guess I could probably get a decent dell PC for like $300ish through school, but I honestly don't know if I am/could be that handy.
I was looking at the CarPC board or whatever it's called and it seemed really complicated. When it comes down to it, the amp shut-off thing is probably the least of my worries, I would really just like a new cd player in the car that I can still control through the steering wheel.
The CarPC thing would be awesome and all, but I just don't know if I'd trust myself with that, or any of my friends. Plus, I don't know if I'd have the money for it in the long run (I'm a broke college kid).
Honestly, this whole site is about installing carpc's.

For $350, I really don't think you will get a car stereo with a DVD player that will last. Better start saving for a good quality one or you are just throwing away your money.
System always under construction
Broke college kid here also, you just have to take your time really. If you wanna do it, you can get it eventually, just takes some time and saving. Not the type of thing you could buy in a store and install overnight.
Spend some time and look through the forums if its not for you then its not for you. When I did my first system I didnt know anything about computers, but in the last couple years my knowledge has grew and grew. All it takes is the want and the ability to search, oh and you have to

Alright, thanks guys, I didn't really realize the whole thing was about installing carpcs, I thought it was just the specific boards. I'll have to take a look around and see what I can do, if anything with a carpc thing.
