You don't even need a DSP, although it will improve sound quality if setup correctly.

There are a number of writeups on how to get 5.1 sound out of audio hardware that supports 5.1 output.

    Technically that is 4.1

For 5.1 you need a center speaker. This is really splitting hairs. The difference between 4.1 and 5.1 in the car will be small.

You still don't need a DSP.

Just get a soundcard with 5.1 analog outputs, plug it into your amps and you're set.
