Any ideas how to build a good looking subwoofer grill?

My 10 inch subwoofer has a flat paper cone which looks like it can be damaged easily, so I want to make a grill for it. All the grills I see on eBay or whatever look ugly, so maybe someone has some ideas to make a good looking one? I dont like the flashy looking chrome stuff, just something simple. I was thinking about bending some coat hangers (painted black) but I need to figure out how to attach them to the box. I'm open to any other ideas you guys may have.

A coat hanger will probably bend to easily to provide any real protection.

Well I was planning on using 3 or more coat hangers arranged horizontally across the driver then maybe taking a rectangular piece of black cloth and wrapping it around the coat hangers which should cover up most of the driver. I am going for a simple, yet elegant/contemporary look. Its not like they will need to withstand that much force. Maybe just a few bags or something banging around in the back. It is for a prefab sealed box.

Buy either the cheapo waffle style and wrap it in non-backed carpet or grill cloth attached via spray glue.

Or get some perforated steel and do the same. Make an MDF ring, cut the perforated metal to the same size as the ring, glue it to the MDF ring, wrap in cloth or leave bare.

I wouldn't trust your coat hanger idea, it bends way too easy. If you really wanted to that route though, look at buying a small round replacement grate that would go in those round Weber BBQ grills.

+1 for the waffle-style grate. I never thought they looked good until my roommate put one of his sub. It actually looks decent, and provides much needed protection to his sub. Alternativley, the manufacturer of your sub may have one that's made specifically to go on your sub. I know JL Audio subs have JL Audio grills that work well and are also very stylish, just like what you're looking for...
