    1996 Audi A4 wiring nightmare - newbie

Upon researching many sites I found this site has the best offering to help answer my questions.

I purchased a Kenwood KDC-MP238 Reciever for my sons Audi. Upon trying to wire the unit I found he had a non-Bose system with an amplifier in the rear speakers. Although the right was replaced with a non-amplified speaker. Upon installation the sound in the rear speakers is faint at best but fairly good out of the front speakers (4) I put in two new Pyle speakers in the rear and that is where the sound depletion is evident. I was told that changing the reciever with new speakers that it would eliminate the need for the amplified speakers. I don't have much knowledge in the area but can determine the souns quality is minimum. Do I need to add an amplifier to power these new speakers and even the front speakers? If so, should it be a 2 or 4 channel? There are other terms such as bridged, crossover, and other terminology I have no idea. What is a solution to this problem? Thanks for any advice and help.

many times, in cars where a stock amplifier is present the entire system has been designed around that concept from the factory.

These factory amplifiers have built in XOs and sometimes the speakers they utilize have strange ohm configurations...(like 3ohms for instance).

your best bet is to either A) see if there's an adapter available for this specific make, model, and stereo option or B) pull the factory amplifier and speakers and replace it all.

If you go with B you can either power the speakers off of the aftermarket head unit or power them off of an aftermarket amplifier...depends on how much money you want to spend. However, seeing as how you have opted for Pyle speakers, I'm guessing that you're wanting to spend as little as possible.

It sounds like I'm heading in the right direction. I'm going with option B, the adapter came with the new head unit and is already wired. Also an additional adapter came with the unit that allows you to use low input and output rca jacks for front and rear speakers. I think this would only be used if I were still using the stock amplified speakers. However, since I'm replacing the head unit, speakers, and amp I don't think I'll be utilizing that any further, correct? My thought is to run all new cables to the rear trunk where the amp will be placed. If I'm using the amp to power six speakers, do I go with a four or two channel amp?

RCAs are not connected to speakers, they are connected to amplifiers. If you are planning on installing amplifiers you will need to utilize RCA connections. If you are not planning on installing an amplifier, you will need to utilize the speaker level outputs to go direct to the speakers and to utilize the built in power in the head unit.

If you're going to power 6 speakers you need 6 channels of amplification. I would suggest that you do some more research into car audio as not understanding what you're getting yourself into can end up costing you a LOT more money than what you think you're saving by doing it yourself. I'd really suggest that you take this vehicle to a dedicated car audio shop and have them do the work.

heres my take on it. first where are you getting 6 speakers from? does the car have tweeters? if so just forget about them. what you need to do to keep it as cheap as you can(which is what im thinking you want) is to run all new speaker wires from the deck to each speaker. what that means is you will need to pull the deck out, pull the door panels off, remove the speakers in the doors, and feed wire from the doors, behind the dash and back to the deck and wire them to the FR and FL speaker wires. now you will need to do the same for the rear speakers. crutchfield says you have 4" speakers i the front doors and either 5.25's or 6.5's will fit the rear deck. i would suggest you get something with a RMS rating of 35w or less. its not that hard to do. now figure where your gonna rin the wires from the trunk to the deck. you can go down both sides of the car and remove the door trim and hide the wire under that, you can run them both down one side or run them down the center going under the carpet and center console up to the deck. and wire then into the RR and RL wires coming off the deck. that should fix any problems being created by the factory amp. just cut the factory wires off at the speakers and just tape to cover the ends so it doesnt short out and so it can be undone if needed later down the road.
