Talking Best 5.1 speakers and sub for under $450

    Hello,
I am a n00b when it comes to car sound systems and would be greatful if somebody could give me some advice. I have already puchased a 5.1 sound card, which has three stereo outputs.

    Thank You

    What car have you got?

How do you intend to install a 5.1 system?

My advice is - less is more - on your budget stick to 2.1. Your overall quality of sound will be better.

I'm not on that much of a low budget. I have already paid for the carputer side of things all that is left is the stereo which i am willing to spend $450 on. I have a sky blue 1992 Toyota Camry which was given to me. I would like 5.1 since I have already spent the money on the sound card.

    Thanks for your input.

Well, for 5.1 you'll need a center channel speaker, a sub, and 4 others for front and rear. In addition, you'll require amps to drive them all. this means somewhere between 1 to 3 amps. You might get away with one of the 5.1 amps on the market today, but that will probably blow most of you 450 bucks, if not all of it.

My main point here is that you probably won't get away for only 450 bucks on anything decent for 5.1.

You may, but I doubt it.

Also, most music is only in 2 channel anyways.

    Cheers

Get front speakers, rear speakers, and a sub. Your sound card hopefully has a bass redirection setting, set that to make sure your sub gets all the bass. For 5.1 movies, you can use AC3Filter and set output to 2/2+SW, so it mixes the center channel into the left and right speakers. Works for me.

As for "cheapest", go to Craigslist or Ebay. I picked up a set of new Focal separates on Ebay for less than half the price at Car Toys. If you're really on a budget it's better to get slightly used or open box quality speakers than new cheap speakers.

For $450 you're gonna have to skimp somewhere. You might also consider getting some of it now and waiting to fill it out later when you have more cash.
