Ok, well FM Radio isn't really...necessary. And if it causes that much hassle I'll just leave it out. But basicly I wanted something to listen to while the PC is starting up, and since I doubt I'll be carrying many CDs with me I thought radio would be the best solution.

Something I did look at was the Lilliput in-dash car PC, mainly because it functioned as a stand alone media player while the OS is booting up. After looking at the specs of it though am a bit put off, it's not that great and basicly no way to upgrade it.

Another thing I looked at, but a tad pricey, out of stock and afaik not available in the UK is the Xenarc MD-X7000 (on this site). I could use that as a stand alone head unit before I get the car PC, it has 4x 55w outputs for me to plug amps/speakers into, and for when I do buy the car PC, it has a aux in. This seems the best option for what I want to do, but only concern is whether using the aux in is going to mean a considerable loss of sq.

If I decide to go with just the car pc...then it's more straightforward, just annoying I have to sit in silence while it starts up :P Which is basicly my only problem with doing this way, it's not that big a deal. What sort of time do most of your carputers take to boot up? I've read through the FAQ post about improving boot up times, but it didn't say (as far as I could see anyway) about what the time could be reduced to.

    Thanks

Why do you need something to listen to for under 30 seconds?

For most people, that's hardly enough time to back out of the driveway...lol

I'd read up about all of the issues on the 7000 before you go and jump on it.

Your boot times will vary depending on how you have your PC configured and if you use hibernation or not.

You can't just swap out your head unit for a Xenarc. A screen has no mounting brackets (it won't just pop in like putting in a new HU), and you'll have to do a lot of fabrication to get it to fit and look good. You don't plug the amps into the Xenarc, thats just a monitor. What you want to do it run RCA cables from your soundcard to your amps, then have them wired to the speakers.

I'm fairly computer inclined and have spent many, many hours getting my carpc to where i want it. I've had 2 in the past year, and I've still got one more bug that I'm ironing out. You'll want to spend lots of time reading everything on this site before you buy anything, and remember, no CarPCs just pop right in, (unless of course you have an infill). Theres tons of FAQs and Guides here to read, they helped me out a lot.

    Good luck
