Recent HD Onboard Codecs - Opinions?

    Hi everyone!

I just wondered what anyones opinions / experiences were of the new onboard HD Audio Codecs which are now being implemented in recent boards?

I'm looking at the Via VT1708A as used in the new Epia SN or the Realtek ALC885 / 888s as used by other manufacturers?

These all have excellent paper specs 100db+ s/n ratio & 4 x stereo 24 bit 192Khz Dacs in the case of the VT1708A and comply to Intels High Definition Audio specification.

I was hoping this might negate having to use an external / pci based sound card. I intend using a good quality (JL Audio) 6 channel amp and good quality speakers.

    Thanks!

    C.

I use the Aopen i945gtt-vfa board which uses Realtek ALC882 HD Audio CODEC on-Board. The sound is very good, IMO, but I don't have a ton of things to compare it against. FWIW, the outs go straight to Zapco amps and Dynaudio comps and a DLS sub. Overall, very good (again, IMHO).

One problem I've found is that the current and recent drivers for the audio sometimes make the PC hang when trying to go into standby.
