I think that proper setup has more influence on sound quality than whether or not you use a headunit.
You choose.

Depends how you want to control volume?
For me a volume dial is essential, so one option wass to run the carpc through the headunit for volume control.
The other options was to use a griffin powermate - which is what I ended up using, thus able to ditch the headunit.
I was thinking about using the griffin powermate and installing it like in this pic. Is the sound quality just as good?![]()
It's a volume control....
If you're concerned on THAT level (concerned with the impact of volume control) on sound quality you should look into an analogue volume control. HOWEVER, it's getting much more detailed than you may want to get into.

The powermate doesn't effect the sound quality - that will all be dependant on your os/soundcard and how it's digitally adjusting the volume.I was thinking about using the griffin powermate and installing it like in this pic. Is the sound quality just as good?
Ditch the head unit. Beleive me... its not worth the trouble. I recently bought a new car and cant stand not having a Carputer in it. I can care less about the head unit.
If you have a reasonable headunit that has a way for sound from the PC to get in (aux in or after market adapter) I would keep it.
For many people the factory level sound is fine, this reduces upfront cost and allows you to hear the sound.... if you want better sound quality after hearing what you have.... make the decision then.
