Post Get a new system or improve on what I already have?

Alright I have had my current system for around 3 years and I am trying to decide if I want to get something new or just improve on what I already have. I'm just looking for some suggestions.

Let me start off by saying that i'm just looking for a louder system that hits harder. But I dont want to spend a very large amount of money.

    My current setup consists of.

    2 12" Kicker Comp VR
The subs are in a sealed box I built custom.
Kicker KX600.1 Mono amp, Kicker tested it at over 700 Watts, I dont know if it is really putting out that much or not.
And I have a kenwood head unit but its fine so that doesnt matter.

Ok so either I can upgrade what I have now by either getting a more powerfull amp or puting the subs in a nice professionaly built ported box.

Or I can sell the subs I got now and get something new. I was thinking maybe 1 12" and using the amp I got now. I was kinda thinking about getting one 12" L7 Solo Baric in a ported box. But i'm not sure that my KX600.1 would be enough to run it even if it is pushing a little extra.

    What are your suggestions? Thanks

if you just want it louder and not spending a lot then go with a ported box.
dropping down to one sub wont get you louder

Well I understand that, but it would be dropping down to one really good sub such as the L7 Solo-Baric and then it would have all of the power from the amp going to it instead of 2 subs. Maybe that isnt a good logic I dont know a ton about car audio.

How much louder will it get with a ported box?

    when you say louder...

you mean more guts to the bass sound, or an over total system volume?

ported will give you a more focused sound at a certain frequency, eg tuning the port.

    edit:
if your subs are 3 years old, just putting new subs in might make a good difference.

how are they wired series or parallel ?

check out this site, it has some good info
    http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp

personally i like 10" subs in a smaller box, you get a nice sharp punchy sound, ported you still get a good sound but with more low frequency response..

but depending what sort of music you listen to and what sort of sound you want, that may not be your "thing"

When I say louder I just mean I want it to hit harder. Just as you said I want more guts to the bass.

try looking into the bandpass boxes, bit more tricky to build, but when you get it right they can sound good..

or a push pull system, where one sub is wired backwards and is facing the other way...
    again, plan it out first

have a good look in that page i linked

Thanks Woofnstuff. Yeah the subs are 3 years old but they have barely been used. I mean I play them every now and then but I never run them very hard.

    I listen mostly to rap/hip-hop.

I remember which way I have them wired but I do know that I changed it back about a year ago and rewired them because they were cutting off any time I got the volume loud. Which was would you recommend they be wired? They are 2ohm version, I do believe I got them wired right though.

Do you think one 12" L7 Solo-Baric would outhit my 2 12"s using my current amp.

I'm not speaking for anyone I know that has an L7.

But if I were to get one it prob be a 12" I mean I could get a 15" though.

The 15" and the 12" both come in 2 or 4 ohm with DVC

im not familiar with the L7 to be honest.

1 sub in the right box can sound good. if you have a weekend spare try making a bandpass box, and see how it goes, you should be able to find a box design program where you can put all the specs of the sub into it and it should spit out the box design and port width and length. give me a PM if you cant find something, i think i still have a few old box design programs about the place, (from the 90's, one might even be a dos based one)

if you are thinking about getting a 15" make sure your amp can deliver the power the sub needs, and if you dont have a CAP in the system now could be a good time to put one in.
eg 500W (RMS) sub, the amp should be 500W (RMS) +/- say 50W RMS slightlky more is better than slightly less. </rant>
